Position Overview

Under supervision (Waste Management Coordinator I) or general supervision (Waste Management Coordinator II), this role involves a variety of routine responsibilities related to the development and execution of the city's waste management and recycling initiatives. This includes collaboration with various departments, external agencies, the city's waste hauler, and the public, while providing professional assistance to the Environmental Programs Manager.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Plan, organize, and participate in the implementation, inspection, enforcement, pollution prevention, contract and grant administration, and data management activities of the Waste Management and Recycling Program.

2. Participate in planning and overseeing collection events; perform outreach and education activities; coordinate waste monitoring and activities; and respond to customer service requests and complaints.

3. Conduct analysis and evaluation of all local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and ordinances governing assigned programs to ensure compliance; interpret applicable legislation as it applies to the Waste Management and Recycling program.

4. Coordinate the city's waste management and recycling programs; provide technical assistance to city departments, divisions, and the business community.

5. Participate in the administration of assigned program budget; conduct grant fund research and prepare draft applications.

6. Educate residents and business owners on proper waste diversion practices; conduct investigations and inspections related to compliance and enforcement.

7. Respond to inquiries from the public and assist in resolving waste management concerns; act as a liaison between residents/businesses and the waste hauler regarding service and billing issues.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
- Local, state, and federal statutes, codes, and regulations related to waste management and recycling.
- Operational characteristics and activities of assigned environmental program area.
- Modern principles and practices of environmental protection applicable to waste management and recycling.
- Public relations and public speaking.

Ability to:
- Plan, organize, direct, coordinate, administer, and evaluate assigned environmental programs or projects.
- Exercise sound judgment to determine compliance with existing laws and regulations.
- Conduct thorough research and prepare clear, concise reports and recommendations.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Requirements

Education/Training:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental science, resource conservation, public administration, or a related field.

Experience:
Administrative experience related to environmental science, resource conservation, or waste management is highly desirable.
