Key Responsibilities:
  • Architect and implement a comprehensive service mesh framework, covering traffic management, security, observability, and resilience for microservices across both public and private clouds.
  • Seamlessly integrate the service mesh with existing systems and applications, ensuring compatibility and operational efficiency across various platforms, including legacy systems.
  • Establish and uphold best practices for service mesh, including security protocols, traffic routing guidelines, circuit management, and access control to maintain a secure application environment.
  • Create detailed monitoring and observability dashboards to provide insights into service mesh health and performance, enabling proactive issue identification and resolution.
  • Mentor and guide engineers on service mesh principles and best practices, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and skill development within the team.
  • Collaborate closely with networking and security teams to ensure the secure integration of the service mesh with existing infrastructure and networks.
  • Work alongside Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) to develop observability, monitoring, and alerting strategies that maintain high availability and performance.
  • Engage actively with the Istio community, contributing to open-source initiatives and representing GEICO's leadership in service mesh adoption.
Technical Expertise Required:
  • In-depth knowledge of service mesh architecture, components, and configuration, including advanced traffic management and security policies.
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and managing service mesh solutions at scale.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Go or Python for extending and customizing service mesh functionalities.
  • Strong understanding of Linux operating systems, including performance optimization and security best practices.
  • Advanced networking knowledge for analyzing and enhancing service mesh performance in a hybrid cloud context.
  • Extensive experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration technologies.
  • Deep familiarity with microservices design patterns, service discovery, API gateways, and distributed tracing.
  • Expertise in observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, and Kiali.
  • Understanding of zero-trust security principles and encryption technologies within service mesh contexts.
  • Knowledge of network protocols and security policies for integrating service mesh with on-premises infrastructure.
  • Experience applying Site Reliability Engineering principles to service mesh environments.
Professional Experience:
  • A minimum of 12 years in software engineering, DevOps, or related fields.
  • At least 6 years of experience in designing and managing microservices architectures.
  • A minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience with Istio and service mesh technologies.
  • 3+ years of experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and mentor engineering teams.
