Key Responsibilities:
  • Architect and implement a comprehensive service mesh framework, focusing on traffic management, security, observability, and resilience for microservices across both public and private clouds.
  • Integrate the service mesh with current infrastructure and applications, ensuring smooth operation and compatibility with various platforms and technologies.
  • Establish and uphold service mesh best practices, including security protocols, traffic routing guidelines, circuit breakers, and access control measures, to ensure a secure and dependable application environment.
  • Create detailed monitoring and observability dashboards to provide insights into service mesh health, performance, and potential issues, facilitating proactive problem-solving.
  • Mentor and guide engineers on service mesh principles and best practices, promoting knowledge sharing and skill development within the team.
  • Collaborate closely with networking and security teams to ensure secure and efficient integration of the service mesh with existing infrastructure and networks.
  • Work alongside Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) to define observability, monitoring, and alerting strategies for maintaining high availability and performance.
  • Actively participate in the Istio community, contribute to open-source initiatives, and represent GEICO's leadership in service mesh adoption.
Technical Expertise Required:
  • Extensive knowledge of service mesh architecture, components, and configuration options, including advanced traffic management and security policies.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing, and managing service mesh solutions at scale.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Go or Python for customizing the service mesh and developing related tools.
  • Strong understanding of Linux operating systems, including performance optimization and security best practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of networking concepts and tools for analyzing and enhancing service mesh performance.
  • Significant experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration platforms.
  • Deep understanding of microservices design patterns and distributed tracing.
  • Expertise in observability tools like Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring service mesh performance.
  • Familiarity with zero-trust security principles and encryption technologies within the context of service mesh.
  • Knowledge of network protocols and security policies for integrating the service mesh with existing infrastructure.
  • Understanding of Site Reliability Engineering principles applied to service mesh environments.
Professional Experience:
  • A minimum of 12 years in software engineering, DevOps, or related fields.
  • At least 6 years of experience in designing and managing microservices architectures.
  • A minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience with Istio and service mesh technologies.
  • At least 3 years of experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration.
  • Proven leadership in technical projects and mentoring of engineers.
