Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia seeks a highly skilled Education and Outreach Coordinator to join our team in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia. This is a full-time position that will serve as the coordinator for City of Promise, a program aimed at improving literacy in the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate after-school reading tutoring programs with City of Promise students and America Reads UVA students, including recruiting, training, and supervising tutors, collaborating with COP, and organizing all tutoring materials.
  • Collaborate with VLP supervisor to create a vision and project management timeline for this position.
  • Build relationships with other community partners to determine how this position can support literacy outreach to local families.
  • Develop community engagement literacy opportunities for local students, including tutoring programs, family literacy programming, and collaboration with existing community-based literacy projects.
  • Attend professional development opportunities through VLP.
  • Organize community-based literacy events.
Requirements
  • Master's degree or a demonstrated mastery in a specialty area, normally signified by significant equivalent experience.
  • At least five years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Education, Psychology, Educational Technology, or a related field.
  • Content knowledge of science-based reading acquisition and evidence-based practices.
  • At least two years of experience in an early education environment (PreK, K-3).
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to interact effectively with a diverse team of internal and external constituencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise, experience, and commitment to diversity, equity, and access.
  • Experience with coaching, consulting, technical assistance, and/or training adult educators and leaders in individual and group settings.
  • Very high attention to detail and timelines.
  • Strong desire to learn new skills and abilities and to continuously improve practices.
  • The job occasionally requires local travel to attend meetings, programs, and participate in coaching and professional development activities.
  • Bilingual speaking and writing ability in English/Spanish.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently.
  • Flexibility and ability to work in an unstructured environment.
  • Skilled listener and collaborator to create a vision for this new position.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong technology skills (email, text, calendar, Microsoft SharePoint applications).
Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs. Candidates must be located in the Charlottesville area and have regular, reliable transportation to drive to varying site locations.

Compensation Information

This is a full-time position with an anticipated range of $70,000 - $75,000, commensurate with education and experience, includes UVA benefits.
