Position Overview:
The Ambulatory Pharmacy Specialist is a crucial member of our pharmacy team, responsible for managing prescription processing for patients and their families within a clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess patient insurance needs for pre-certification, payment responsibilities, and coverage limitations, ensuring all necessary actions are taken prior to patient discharge.
  • Maintain open communication with ambulatory clinical pharmacists, social workers, and specialty pharmacy teams to gather complete and accurate financial information for claim processing.
  • Promptly inform clinical practices of any coverage issues to determine appropriate next steps.
  • Proactively share benefit investigation findings with clinical practices and patients.
  • Support all myPennPharmacy services as required.
  • Collaborate with internal team members to compile necessary documentation, including prescriptions and billing information.
  • Provide follow-up communication to patients, clinical practices, and families regarding pharmaceutical needs and eligibility information to ensure continued access to medications.
  • Engage with medical staff to obtain timely and accurate clinical and financial information necessary for reimbursement.
  • Educate patients and clinical practices about insurance coverage related to discharge medications.
  • Perform duties in alignment with Penn Medicine's values, policies, and procedures.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned to support the unit, department, and health system.

Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with 3 to 5 years of experience as a certified pharmacy technician in a retail or outpatient pharmacy setting. Pharmacy Technician Certification is mandatory.
