Position Summary:

The Clinical Coordinator for Cardiac Pulmonary Medicine embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. This position requires an experienced Registered Nurse who, alongside providing direct patient care, is responsible for facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to patient management, optimizing patient flow, staffing, resource allocation, and problem resolution during assigned shifts.

The Cardiac Pulmonary Medicine unit comprises 29 beds, primarily admitting patients from intensive care units or the emergency department. With a focus on cardiology and pulmonology, our patient demographic includes individuals with significant respiratory care needs, as well as those recovering from cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures. The unit is staffed with nursing and respiratory therapy professionals to ensure high-quality patient care, supported by our medicine, cardiology, and lung transplant services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee unit operations during assigned shifts in accordance with established policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate staffing assignments to ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care.
  • Direct patient care activities conducted by nursing staff and support personnel during shifts.
  • Lead new initiatives and participate in unit, departmental, or hospital-wide committees and task forces.
  • Engage with patients and their families regarding nursing care and treatment plans.
  • Implement action plans to ensure safe, quality, and efficient patient care.
  • Ensure the safety and security of patients, their families, and staff members.
  • Provide direct patient care as needed.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Clinical:
    • Exhibit clinical proficiency and competence.
    • Conduct ongoing assessments of assigned patients and their families' biopsychosocial and educational needs.
    • Implement appropriate interventions to address patient and family needs.
    • Monitor and document patient responses to therapeutic interventions and progress toward established outcomes.
    • Adopt a patient-first and cost-effective approach to resource utilization.
    • Ensure completion of quality improvement activities during assigned shifts.
    • Assess and respond to critical situations involving patients, staff, and visitors, consulting with management as necessary.
  • Professional:
    • Maintain a professional image in appearance and conduct.
    • Advocate for patients, their families, colleagues, the community, and the nursing profession.
    • Demonstrate accountability and compassion consistently.
    • Represent the nursing profession effectively in various forums.
    • Integrate theoretical knowledge with clinical expertise in decision-making processes.
    • Assume responsibility for meeting regulatory and mandatory requirements.

  • Leadership:

    • Analyze daily activities and recommend operational improvements as needed.
    • Anticipate staffing needs for future shifts and arrange coverage accordingly.
    • Facilitate effective communication of incidents among departments.
    • Promote the philosophy and objectives of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare.
    • Foster a collaborative environment conducive to communication among patients, staff, and visitors.
    • Identify and communicate key issues and trends to management, providing recommendations for improvement.
    • Contribute to budgetary discussions, particularly regarding staffing and cost containment.
    • Build relationships across departments to enhance patient care.
  • Education:
    • Assess and communicate staff development needs to management.
    • Orient new staff to the Clinical Coordinator and Charge Nurse roles.
    • Serve as a resource for staff development.
    • Contribute to unit orientation processes.
  • Research:
    • Ensure completion of research activities during assigned shifts.
    • Participate in nursing research initiatives.
