Wafer Quality Metrology Specialist

POSITION: METROLOGY ENGINEER
FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR, PROCESS CHARACTERIZATION/NPI
OVERVIEW:
Under the guidance of the Director of Process Characterization/NPI, the Metrology Engineer plays a crucial role in formulating methodologies and recipes aimed at enhancing wafer quality, particularly focusing on Focused Ion Beam (FIB) tools. This role encompasses the integration and evaluation of prototype wafers for emerging technology initiatives and next-generation projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Developing and refining recipes for prototype wafers tailored for FIB tools.
- Engaging with various engineering teams to address inquiries related to metrology requests, wafer quality, and yield challenges.
- Overseeing and maintaining prototype line operations, including FIB and other inline characterizations.
- Conducting thorough failure analyses to enhance wafer-level defect rates and yield, utilizing FIB for detailed assessments.
- Creating and delivering process integration and characterization strategies for innovative technology programs and next-generation products.
- Executing wafer-level process evaluations, performing failure analyses on new prototype wafer processes, and suggesting corrective measures to resolve identified issues.
- Utilizing analytical software such as JMP or MS Visual Basic to analyze data, identify root causes of process variations, and prepare reports or presentations of findings.
- Complying with all safety regulations and protocols as mandated.
- Performing additional related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics, or equivalent relevant experience; advanced degrees preferred.
- Three to five years of practical experience in wafer manufacturing, the head media sector, or semiconductor production environments.
- Proven expertise in yield enhancement and failure analysis.
- Familiarity with FIB and/or SEM is advantageous.
- Experience with JMP or similar analytical tools is essential.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Understanding of process and characterization principles, practices, and metrology tool usage.
- Knowledge of magnetic recording head or HDD manufacturing processes.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Office applications for creating spreadsheets, documents, and presentations.
- Capable of designing experiments, analyzing outcomes, and recommending corrective actions.
- Adept at preparing and discussing comprehensive presentations and drawing logical engineering conclusions.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, across all organizational levels.
- Collaborative work ethic with the ability to engage productively with colleagues and management.
- Commitment to adhering to safety policies and procedures.
- Strong critical thinking skills for issue resolution, root cause analysis, and process improvement recommendations.
- Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and time management capabilities.
- Proficient problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Adaptable and able to prioritize tasks effectively.
The annual base salary for this full-time position is competitive, with additional bonus potential and benefits. Salary may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, relevant knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The Metrology Engineer operates in an office setting during standard business hours and within a class 100 ESD-sensitive wafer manufacturing facility, requiring the use of cleanroom attire. The work schedule may be adjusted as necessary to meet operational needs. Exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and varying noise levels may occur during work hours. The role involves physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, and operating office equipment.
