DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting individuals facing the complex challenges of homelessness, substance use disorders, and serious mental health issues. Our mission is to foster a community where every individual is valued and no one experiences abandonment or homelessness.

As a leading provider of services for multiply disabled adults who have faced chronic homelessness, DESC supports nearly 2,000 individuals daily. Our integrated service model is crafted to help clients secure and sustain safe, affordable housing. DESC is recognized both nationally and regionally for its innovative approaches to addressing homelessness.

Job Overview:

We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Service Coordinators to oversee daily operations at DESC's Mary Pilgrim Inn. The role involves delivering essential support services as part of a collaborative team committed to aiding our most vulnerable community members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Uphold and communicate agency policies and procedures.
  • Address client crises, including medical, mental health, and interpersonal issues.
  • Foster appropriate social interactions with clients.
  • Monitor common areas to ensure the safety and security of clients and facilities.
  • Consult with staff and external agencies regarding client needs.
  • Provide information on available social and health services.
  • Refer clients to specialized programs or external services as necessary.
  • Screen referrals from other organizations.
  • Support community volunteers during shifts.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist with food service operations during shifts.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in the work environment.
  • Recruit and supervise client volunteers for various tasks.
  • Perform duties at shelter stations and ensure compliance with established procedures.
  • Monitor the return of issued items to clients.
  • Document services provided during shifts accurately.
  • Assist clients transitioning from nighttime shelter to daytime activities.
  • Observe and manage client behaviors in surrounding areas.
  • Provide support to individuals experiencing crises related to mental health or substance use.
  • Offer information and referrals to community services for those in need.
  • Complete other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Basic understanding of homelessness and its various characteristics.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with diverse staff.
  • Ability to engage with clients exhibiting a range of challenging behaviors.
  • Commitment to a philosophy of cooperation and respect for clients.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience addressing the challenges associated with mental illness and substance use.

Physical Requirements:

This role requires the ability to sit, communicate effectively, lift and carry items up to 40 pounds, and operate computer systems. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
