Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Departmental Facilities Planner II to join our team at the County of Los Angeles, CA. As a key member of our facilities planning team, you will be responsible for planning, designing, and coordinating the development of new facilities and the renovation of existing ones.

Key Responsibilities
  • Confer with administrative and operating personnel to discuss functional requirements, scope, and operational needs of proposed buildings and space utilization.
  • Conduct site surveys and make recommendations on site requirements for new facilities and the suitability of available buildings or sites.
  • Prepare or supervise the preparation of requests for proposed capital projects and other construction or alteration projects, including leased properties.
  • Coordinate capital projects and other building or alteration projects, representing the department's interests in contacts with various stakeholders.
  • Determine or supervise the determination of space needs in terms of anticipated operational requirements, making projections and recommendations for intermediate and long-range building expansion or alteration programs.
  • Approve plans and specifications prior to the start of construction, ensuring they conform to the department's needs and local, state, or federal agency standards.
  • Inspect or supervise the inspection of capital projects and other building or alteration projects during and after construction to ensure compliance with departmental needs.
  • Prepare and supervise the preparation of drawings, specifications, and estimates for building alterations and equipment installations.
  • Makes preliminary cost estimates for major construction projects and ensures projects are kept within budgetary limitations.
  • Prepare or supervise the preparation of applications to agencies that may participate financially in building projects and provide technical or other required information.
  • Prepare or supervise the preparation of specifications for the purchase of building equipment and evaluate bids received.
  • Expedites and coordinates the delivery and installation of building equipment and ensures deficiencies are corrected during the warranty period.
  • Coordinates building and equipment maintenance, telephone moving, and miscellaneous related services incidental to primary responsibilities.
  • Represent special fund agencies to negotiate and recommend contract architects' fees and architectural services agreements and related documents outlining scope and budget.
  • Supervise a staff that participates in facilities planning and related services.
Requirements
  • Option 1: Two years' experience as a Departmental Facilities Planner I planning and executing major capital projects.
  • Option 2: Graduation from an accredited four-year college and four years' experience at the architectural associate level in connection with the planning, development, design, or coordination of major architectural building and alteration projects.
  • Option 3: Four years' experience at the architectural associate level in connection with the planning, development, design, or coordination of major architectural building and alteration projects or four years in a responsible staff capacity analyzing and making recommendations for the solution of problems of major building projects.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience as a project lead in designing, developing, or coordinating a major building project.
  • Experience in public speaking at community and/or departmental meetings, presenting at conferences, or symposiums.
  • Supervising staff by providing input on work products, assigning tasks, training staff, scheduling projects, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Experience with management and oversight of a project related to parks, trails, and other park-related facilities or amenities with a budget of $1,000,000 or more.
Working Conditions

The physical demands of this position include light physical effort, occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit, and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions is required.
