Position Overview

The Aquatics Program Supervisor will be well-versed in all facets of the Aquatics division, encompassing Lifeguarding, Swim Instruction, Aquatic Fitness Classes, and Coaching. This role will also involve supporting general aquatic administration, including scheduling, programming, and supervising staff. The position requires adherence to specific morning or evening hours as designated by the Aquatics Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand, articulate, and embody the mission, purpose, and values of the Kroc Center and The Salvation Army.
  • Oversee, train, and schedule aquatic personnel while managing daily operations of the aquatic facility.
  • Directly supervise aquatic programming, which includes Safety & Education classes, Group Fitness, Instructional sessions, Competitive swimming, Events, and other assigned activities.
  • Maintain a visible presence on the pool deck during programming and peak usage times, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • May be required to instruct, coach, or lifeguard during aquatic programs.
  • Research and contribute to the development of innovative aquatic programs.
  • Assist in creating, developing, and implementing staff professional and personal development plans.
  • Evaluate programs to ensure they effectively meet the needs of patrons and the community.
  • Organize and conduct various aquatic exercise clinics and conferences.
  • Prepare and complete various documentation, including reports, training records, statistical data, and class registration forms.
  • Handle administrative tasks related to training, class registrations, incidents, volunteer needs, and event calendars.
  • Establish and maintain staff training manuals and Emergency Action Plans for the aquatics division.
  • Assist with regular maintenance and operational support for all pools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Set up and dismantle facility equipment as required.
  • Report any defects or necessary repairs on the pool deck, ensuring all records and reports are completed.
  • Foster effective communication among staff members.
  • Monitor aquatic inventory to ensure adequate materials are available for programming and initiate orders for replacements as needed.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to the community, ensuring all patrons receive prompt and courteous assistance.
  • Enforce facility rules with patience and consideration to maintain a safe environment for all members and visitors.
  • Analyze situations and take swift, effective action; maintain constant observation of assigned areas to identify potential hazards.
  • Perform rescues for swimmers in distress and provide necessary care, including first aid and CPR.
  • Inspect and uphold cleanliness in swimming pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, and other assigned spaces.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and patrons in person and over the phone.
  • Exemplify The Salvation Army's mission through actions and words during employment.
  • Engage with both small and large groups with confidence and enthusiasm.
  • Arrive on time and prepared for classes or assigned duties.
  • Possess knowledge of safety protocols and ensure compliance among all class participants.
  • Adhere to the dress code as prescribed by the Aquatics Manager, maintaining a professional appearance while on duty.
  • Implement water chemical tests as per established Operating Procedures.
  • Attend staff meetings as assigned.
  • Perform other tasks as required and assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to swim 500 yards continuously in under 10 minutes.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all four competitive strokes and racing starts.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist intermittently or continuously.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must maintain good physical and mental health to meet the demands of all aquatic areas.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience with a minimum of 2 years in roles such as lifeguard, swim instructor, aquatic coach, or aquatic fitness instructor, preferably with supervisory experience.
  • Must hold and maintain current certifications in American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) or higher; CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, and Lifeguarding.
  • Preference for candidates with a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate from a nationally recognized organization or proof of enrollment within the first 90 days of hire.
  • Preference for American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification.
  • Significant experience working in a large public pool facility is preferred.
  • Documented knowledge of aquatic instruction principles, safety protocols (First Aid, CPR, water rescues, and lifeguarding), personnel supervision, and facility management.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Must be able to work varied shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and split shifts.
  • Experience in public interaction is essential.
  • Demonstrate the ability to engage positively and energetically with staff, clients, members, and customers. Must be self-motivated and capable of working independently as well as part of a team. Effective communication skills are crucial.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage projects that may conflict in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Ability to analyze problems and implement effective solutions.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity regarding information and documentation.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating in English; bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.
  • Adhere to a philosophy of education consistent with that of the Kroc Center and The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to work with children, adults, and staff in leadership, counseling, and educational roles.
  • Must possess strong swimming skills with proficiency and endurance.
