Position Summary

We are looking for a Junior Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team at the Des Moines manufacturing facility.

Since its inception in 1945, the Bridgestone Des Moines plant has been a cornerstone in producing tires for agricultural, construction, forestry, and off-the-road applications. As a Junior Mechanical Engineer, your role will involve researching, planning, designing, developing, and implementing mechanical products and systems. This includes instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical transmission systems, as well as thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems for production-related equipment. You will leverage your advanced knowledge and experience to tackle complex engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities

In this position, your primary responsibilities will include:

Engineering Design and Development

  • Act as the mechanical expert and technical lead in your designated area.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to understand current and future designs, safety implications, workflow, and productivity.
  • Lead initiatives focused on continuous improvement and corrective actions, emphasizing waste reduction.
  • Monitor and evaluate existing systems and processes, recommending enhancements to improve safety, reliability, quality, and efficiency.
  • Work closely with the maintenance team to identify root causes of mechanical failures and develop preventive measures.
  • Oversee the Safety Design Process, including risk assessments and validation of safety systems.
  • Create CAD drawings for mechanical safety systems and barriers.

Project Management

  • Analyze project requirements and address engineering challenges to ensure timely and budget-compliant solutions.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, and justifications, and manage procurement processes.
  • Oversee various projects, from new machine installations to upgrades, ensuring adherence to timelines and quality standards.
  • Provide oversight for contractors to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Participate in all project phases, including design, implementation, and testing.

Consulting and Communication

  • Engage in daily cross-functional team meetings as the technical mechanical lead.
  • Provide updates on project progress and address any long-term issues as prioritized by management.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and stakeholders to ensure project success.
  • Offer technical support to customers as needed.

Maintenance of Expertise

  • Stay informed about industry trends and technological advancements to provide strategic recommendations.
  • Conduct training sessions for engineers and production teams.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team settings.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proactive and resourceful, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Team-oriented, with experience in cross-functional collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Inventor software.
  • Strong skills in MS Office Suite, including PowerPoint and MS Project.
  • Solid understanding of machine design principles.
  • Familiarity with SAP for procurement and project tracking.
