Community Service Society of New York seeks a highly skilled and experienced Vice President of Policy Research and Advocacy to lead our policy department and drive progressive change in New York City.
Job SummaryThe Vice President of Policy Research and Advocacy will oversee a team of policy analysts and spearhead initiatives to address economic, racial, and social inequality. This role will work closely with the President and Executive Vice President to develop and lead policy research initiatives, engage with policymakers and advocates, and provide critical guidance to policy staff.
Key Responsibilities- Manage the policy department, including budgeting, hiring, and supervising staff, as well as setting departmental goals and monitoring progress.
- Direct major research activities, including the annual Unheard Third survey, and conceptualize and carry out research individually and with department staff.
- Work with the President and Executive Vice President to identify and develop policy agendas, and report to the Board of Trustees on key policy initiatives.
- Apply for new grants and update funders on current grants, in consultation with the Development Department.
- Represent CSS in public meetings with elected officials, lobby for policy changes, and build coalitions with key partners.
- Write reports, policy briefs, op-eds, and reviews, and edit similar written work produced by department staff.
- Engage with policy and advocacy partners and coalitions across all areas of the Department's work.
- Ph.D. or master's degree in public policy, urban planning, economics, or related field, and a minimum of five years of supervisory experience.
- Familiarity with a broad range of policy and community development issues in New York City and New York State, with knowledge of related social policy issues.
- Extensive research experience displaying strong qualitative, quantitative, and research methodology.
- Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills, as well as excellent judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to provide critical guidance and feedback to research staff.
- Creative problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to take initiative.
- Ability to engage effectively with CSS' constituency, policymakers, and advocates.
The annual salary for this position is $165,000 to $195,000, and Community Service Society provides a comprehensive employee benefits package, including performance-based bonus, health, dental, and vision coverage, life, AD&D, and long-term disability insurance, 403b retirement savings plan, defined benefit retirement plan, flexible spending accounts, commuter benefits plan, EAP, and more.
CSS offers a hybrid work environment requiring onsite work at least two days per week and three days per week of remote work.
