LOCATION: New York
amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is in search of a proactive and strategic Senior Vice President, Head of Research to lead the operational management of amfAR's research department.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Senior Vice President, Research is responsible for the development, leadership, and oversight of amfAR's research grants department. This role involves analyzing and establishing research priorities, executing research objectives, and managing the daily functions of the research division. Collaborating closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the Program Advisory Committee, this position will take charge of the strategic vision to enhance amfAR's research initiatives, refine and shape the operational plan, and create a strategy for execution. As a member of amfAR's senior management team, this role will oversee the department budget and direct the compliance and administration of grants. The Senior Vice President will serve as the representative for amfAR's research agenda. Since its inception, amfAR has allocated nearly $635 million to its programs and has funded over 3,800 research teams globally.
KEY DUTIES:
1. Formulate a strategic plan to advance and advocate for innovative research and implement the approved strategic initiatives.
2. Design, execute, monitor, and assess research projects.
3. Foster strong working relationships with the Chief Executive Officer and other senior management team members to align research efforts with amfAR's broader programs, communications, and fundraising activities.
4. Create a strategy to elevate the visibility and impact of amfAR's research initiatives in collaboration with the CEO and senior management team.
5. Cultivate and maintain relationships with the Trustees, Program Advisory Committee, Scientific Advisory Committee, and Senior Scientific Consultant to refine amfAR's research strategies.
6. Act as a knowledgeable spokesperson for amfAR's research initiatives, staying informed on developments in a rapidly evolving landscape.
7. Build and sustain partnerships with other research funding organizations and researchers, actively participating in relevant local, national, and international research forums.
8. Seek collaborative opportunities with researchers or other organizations to broaden the impact of amfAR's research programs.
9. Maintain contact with grantees, conduct site visits, provide necessary technical support, and report on the progress of funded research.
10. Represent amfAR at various national conferences and engage with the media.
11. Establish and oversee the annual budget for the research division.
12. Develop and manage contracts with external consultants.
13. Supervise, mentor, and evaluate research division staff; recruit additional personnel as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctoral degree in biomedical science, particularly in viral research; Proven leadership experience in a health or public health organization, or extensive research experience in viral pathology; Comprehensive knowledge of biomedical science and its funding landscape; Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts in accessible language; Proven ability to collaborate effectively with activists, policymakers, and media representatives; Comfort in addressing controversial topics; Strong team-building and collaborative skills; Highly organized, strategic thinker with decisiveness; Willingness to travel for off-site meetings and work beyond standard hours; A personal commitment to amfAR's mission and objectives.

Salary range: $150,000 to $200,000.
