POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Youth Engagement Programs Intern will play a vital role within the Education Department of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). This internship is designed to promote diversity and equity within the museum sector by providing a paid opportunity for individuals from historically marginalized communities.

INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVES:
This position aims to equip the intern with a comprehensive understanding of museum operations and educational practices, preparing them for future careers in education, art, or non-profit sectors. Interns will have the chance to set professional development goals and propose projects that align with their interests.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The intern will primarily assist the Teen Arts Group (TAG) and will be expected to:
  • Participate in weekly TAG meetings and assist in planning agendas.
  • Support the supervisor in organizing workshops and events.
  • Act as a mentor and role model for new TAG members.
  • Track attendance and maintain communication with participants and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of learning objectives and evaluation plans for programs.
  • Assist in logistical planning for events and activities.
  • Engage with other departments within the museum to enhance collaborative efforts.

COMPENSATION:
The hourly wage for this position is competitive, and interns will also receive various benefits, including:

TIME COMMITMENT:
Interns are expected to commit to approximately 10 hours per week for the duration of the internship, with flexibility to accommodate academic schedules.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
  • A strong interest in education, art, and community engagement.
  • Experience working with youth, particularly teenagers.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer applications.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
While prior experience in a museum setting is not required, candidates should show a commitment to the arts and a desire to work with young audiences. Current students or recent graduates are preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The internship will primarily take place in a controlled indoor environment, with occasional activities at various locations. Interns should be prepared for both stationary and active tasks, including lifting light materials as needed.
