Position Overview:

  • The Major & Planned Giving Officer (MPGO) will oversee the comprehensive process of major and planned giving, encompassing the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of potential major and planned giving donors. This role requires a mission-driven professional with a successful history of securing significant donations and expertise in major and planned gift fundraising.

Key Responsibilities:

Donor Engagement:

  • Strategically engage in fundraising efforts to secure major and planned gifts from both existing and prospective donors.
  • Develop proposals and written materials, including visit strategies, correspondence, and solicitation documents.
  • Participate in donor events to cultivate relationships and expand outreach within the environmental community.
  • Collaborate with leadership to set and achieve ambitious fundraising goals, supported by a robust schedule of meetings with donors and influencers.

Collaboration with Development Team:

  • Work in tandem with the Development Team to meet overall fundraising objectives, particularly in increasing major and planned gifts.
  • Support and enhance the engagement of senior leadership in major and planned giving initiatives.
  • Create compelling donor communications, including requests and reports related to major and planned giving.
  • Coordinate with the Development Team on events and campaigns to connect with major and planned giving prospects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; CFRE certification is a plus.
  • 7-9 years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, with a focus on planned giving and major gift fundraising.
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating, soliciting, and closing major and planned gifts, including six or seven-figure contributions.

Skills and Abilities:

  • In-depth understanding of various major and planned giving vehicles, along with current philanthropic trends.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with strong active listening abilities.
  • Proficient in preparing well-crafted materials, including proposals and reports.
  • Strong problem-solving and negotiation skills, with a creative approach to persuading and motivating others.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently on complex donor strategies.
  • Results-oriented, with a focus on meeting deadlines and achieving goals.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism, with respect for the confidentiality of donor information.
  • Preferred background in environmental issues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word.
  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a diverse team.

Travel Requirements:

  • 10-25% domestic travel may be required.
  • Availability for occasional evening or weekend work.
