Culinary Support Specialist, KIPP NYC

KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit organization comprising 18 free, public charter schools located across the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. We collaborate with families and communities to establish engaging and rigorous educational environments aimed at fostering a more equitable society. Since our inception in 1995 with KIPP Academy in the Bronx, we have grown to serve over 11,000 students and alumni, supported by a dedicated staff that includes many alumni.
The Culinary Support Specialist, under the guidance of the Head Chef at the designated school, is an integral member of the KIPP NYC Culinary Team, responsible for preparing and serving meals, including breakfast, lunch, and snacks, for our school community. While prior experience is advantageous, we are open to training candidates who demonstrate potential. This role demands adherence to the highest standards of food safety, sanitation, and freshness.
Key Responsibilities:Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
- Cleaning pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and trays during meal service.
- Assisting with the clearing of dining areas.
- Maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen and serving areas.
- Supporting food preparation as needed.
- Following established protocols for food safety and cleanliness.
- Keeping the assigned work area safe and sanitary.
- Ensuring proper care and maintenance of kitchen equipment.
- Regular attendance is crucial.
- Participating in special meal events as required.
- Understanding the operation of commercial kitchen equipment.
- Upholding personal hygiene standards and adhering to the dress code.
- Providing assistance in various production or service areas as necessary.
- Strong interpersonal skills that foster a collaborative work environment and embody our core values: enthusiasm, resilience, optimism, compassion, social awareness, gratitude, and humor.
- Basic knowledge of sanitation and cleanliness practices.
- Ability to perform moderate physical tasks, including standing, lifting, bending, and carrying items up to 50 lbs.
- Effective communication skills.

- Desire for continuous professional development and openness to constructive feedback.
- Flexibility and willingness to exceed expectations to support KIPP NYC students.
- Exposure to varying temperatures and wet conditions.
- Ability to navigate uneven and slippery surfaces.
- Reaching above and below shoulder height may be required.
- Occasional repetitive hand movements.
- Exposure to heat from kitchen appliances and the need to move heavy items.
- High noise levels from kitchen equipment and student activity during meals.
KIPP NYC offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $17 to $19 for the Culinary Support Specialist position.
