POSITION: PROCESS ENGINEER

Imagine a world where all plastics are recycled. Currently, less than 10% of plastics are effectively recycled, with the majority ending up in landfills, incinerators, or polluting our natural environments. At Alterra Energy, we are pioneering a solution to this issue by transforming plastics back into their fundamental components, enabling the production of new plastics and other valuable materials. Our mission is to revolutionize the perception of used plastics, demonstrating their potential for renewal and sustainability.

The Process Engineer will play a vital role in delivering engineering solutions for the innovation and implementation of our proprietary thermal liquefaction technology. This position offers the chance to take on leadership responsibilities as we aim to become the leading provider of ISCC Plus certified pyrolysis products. The successful candidate will be tasked with creating engineering deliverables and offering technical expertise to both the project development team for new facilities and the commercial team for technology licensing opportunities throughout the project lifecycle. This role is full-time and exempt.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee, execute, and/or assess all components of a Process Design Package (PDP), which includes but is not limited to:
    • Basis of Design
    • Material and Energy Balances
    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
    • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Process Equipment List
    • Equipment Data Sheets
    • Utility Summary
    • Process Control Narrative
    • Instrument List
    • Line and Valve List
    • Relief Load Summary
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of the process technology through hands-on plant operations and mentorship from the engineering team.
  • Provide technical direction during project engineering and safety evaluations (including PFD and P&ID reviews, model reviews, PHAs, and HAZOPs).
  • Contribute innovative ideas for future technological enhancements aimed at minimizing capital and operational expenditures for new facilities.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders throughout all phases of the project lifecycle, from feasibility studies to startup and commissioning.
  • Deliver on-site construction, startup, and commissioning technical and operational support.
  • Enhance the workflow associated with the deployment of our technology.
  • Offer process technical assistance to the commercial team.
  • Maintain effective communication with the engineering team and all project stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering.
  • Proven technical and practical engineering skills with a track record of delivering high-quality work within scheduled timelines.
  • A minimum of 5 years of industry experience in engineering design or capital projects, with experience in PSM regulated facilities being essential.
  • Strong foundation in process engineering principles, including:
    • Process Simulation
    • PFD & P&ID Development
    • Hydraulic Calculations
    • Process Vessel Sizing
    • Overpressure Analysis and Relief Load Calculations
  • Basic understanding of industry standards, specifications, codes, and regulations (e.g., ANSI, ASME, API, NFPA, PIP, TEMA).
  • Experience with process modeling software such as Aspen+, HYSYS, or ChemCAD.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD; experience with Plant 3D is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a strong sense of accountability.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in engineering capital projects within the chemical, petrochemical, or oil and gas sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience as a lead engineer or discipline lead on multidisciplinary capital projects.
  • Basic understanding of other engineering disciplines.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a desk and using a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
Salary Range:
  • $90,000-$130,000, based on experience and expertise.
