Job Overview

The Desktop Imaging Specialist is a key technical role responsible for the planning, execution, verification, and validation of the creation, deployment, integration, and maintenance of desktop system images across the organization. The specialist ensures all desktop environments comply with security, performance, and operational requirements, including Department of Defense (DoD) standards and other relevant regulations. This individual will work closely with cross-functional teams to maintain the integrity of desktop systems, provide technical support, and drive continuous improvements in imaging processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Image Creation, Deployment, and Maintenance:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain secure and standardized desktop system images that adhere to industry best practices and organizational requirements.
  • Ensure compatibility of desktop images across various environments and domains, managing both physical and virtual deployments.
  • Perform post-implementation validation and verification of images, ensuring functionality, performance, and compliance.
  • Update and patch images to incorporate the latest operating system and application updates, security patches, and configuration changes.
Audit and Process Evaluation:
  • Regularly audit and evaluate the desktop imaging process to assess costs, risks, scalability, and supportability for desktop systems.
  • Identify potential weaknesses in the imaging process and implement improvements to enhance system security, performance, and reliability.
  • Ensure all desktop system images are compliant with DoD, organizational, and regulatory requirements, including security policies and guidelines.
Technical Analysis and Total Systems Solutions:
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to analyze and interpret user and product requirements.
  • Translate these requirements into total systems solutions that are within technical, schedule, and budgetary constraints.
  • Work closely with hardware and software vendors to ensure compatibility and support for the desktop systems being imaged and deployed.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation:
  • Continuously evaluate and refine the desktop imaging process to improve efficiency, performance, and security.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and innovation in the imaging and deployment process.
  • Leverage emerging technologies to enhance the imaging process, reduce manual intervention, and streamline system updates and maintenance.
Tier 1-3 Technical Support:
  • Provide Tier 1-3 technical support for issues related to desktop images, BIOS, operating systems, and related software.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to desktop deployments, system configurations, and post-deployment performance.
  • Collaborate with the IT support team to provide training and documentation on desktop image deployment and maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation for all desktop images, including installation guides, configuration manuals, and user support documentation.
Compliance and Security Management:
  • Ensure all desktop images meet DoD and organizational security requirements, including the application of Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
  • Work closely with the cybersecurity team to mitigate security risks, apply necessary patches, and perform vulnerability assessments.
  • Maintain compliance with security frameworks such as NIST, FISMA, and other relevant standards.
  • Manage security configurations for desktop environments, including encryption, access control, and security software integration.
Cross-functional Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with other IT teams, including networking, security, and systems administrators, to ensure seamless integration of desktop systems into the broader IT environment.
  • Participate in cross-functional team meetings to discuss and resolve issues related to desktop systems, network connectivity, and software compatibility.
  • Provide input into the strategic planning of desktop infrastructure, contributing to long-term technology roadmaps.

Required Qualifications:

  • Clearance: Active Secret Clearance.
  • Certifications: CompTIA Security+ or equivalent certification required.
  • Experience:
    • Extensive experience in creating, maintaining, and troubleshooting desktop system images.
    • Strong knowledge of BIOS, OS configuration, and security protocols.
    • Familiarity with DoD compliance requirements and security standards.
    • Experience with tools and platforms for image deployment (e.g., SCCM, MDT, Ghost, WDS, etc.).
    • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for automation of image-related tasks is a plus.

  • Experience working in government or defense environments.
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, and other enterprise-level management tools.
  • Experience with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) technologies.
