About Barrier Free Living

Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to empowering New Yorkers with disabilities to live independently within their communities. Through a range of residential and non-residential services, BFL supports disabled survivors of domestic violence, provides transitional shelter for the disabled homeless, and offers outreach programs for physically disabled individuals facing mental health or substance abuse challenges.

Our comprehensive services encompass case management, housing placements, independent living skills training, occupational therapy, individual counseling, advocacy within various systems (medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice), and referrals to external resources.

Resident Support Specialist

We are seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Resident Support Specialists. In this role, you will play a vital part in maintaining a secure and safe environment for staff, residents, and visitors.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide coverage at the Reception Desk, ensuring smooth entry and exit procedures for staff, residents, and visitors. Answer and direct telephone calls as needed, and complete administrative tasks assigned by supervisors.
  • Contribute to upholding fire safety regulations and other facility-related protocols.
  • Maintain courteous, professional, and respectful interactions with all residents, staff, and guests.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of appropriate boundaries with residents and staff as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Assist in addressing and following up on any incidents related to security or safety within the facility. Provide emergency response and crisis management support when required.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all log and incident documentation, recording security and safety issues/incidents as directed by supervisors.
  • Perform light housekeeping tasks, such as sweeping, mopping, trash removal, snow removal, or cleaning, at the request and direction of the Shift Supervisor. These tasks may be necessary when housekeeping staff is unavailable and a safety concern is identified by the Shift Supervisor.
Qualifications:
  • Strong oral communication skills and fundamental writing competency are essential.
  • Ability to think and act calmly in emergency situations is required.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and procedures is beneficial.
