Position Overview

Office Location: Dickinson, ND

Apex Engineering Group is seeking a Lead Engineer to join our Municipal Group in Dickinson, ND. This role is pivotal in overseeing a dedicated team of engineers, technicians, and support personnel on various municipal initiatives from inception through to execution. The Lead Engineer will independently manage projects while also fostering collaboration and mentorship among team members. Reporting typically to a senior engineer or sector leader, this position may also involve marketing and business development activities.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver comprehensive engineering services, including studies, planning, design, specifications, reports, and project management.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients, supervisors, and project teams, providing regular updates throughout all project phases.
  • Participate in company, project, and client meetings as necessary.
  • Lead proposal preparation and engage in interviews to secure new projects, with increasing responsibilities in business development as experience grows.
  • Exhibit initiative and sound judgment in decision-making.
  • Guide engineering technicians and team members in developing project plans and specifications.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams on complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Adhere to company policies and safety regulations.
  • Execute responsibilities with a high degree of professionalism, attention to detail, and ethical standards.
  • Work effectively both independently and within a team setting.
  • Engage in professional organizations and community leadership initiatives as appropriate.
  • Be prepared for travel and occasional overnight stays, particularly during peak construction periods.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering is required; a Master's degree is advantageous.
  • Professional Engineer License is preferred or the ability to obtain one within 6-12 months.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in civil engineering, specifically within the municipal sector.
  • Experience in civil design, including drawings and specifications related to water/sewer utilities, roadways, and drainage systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with local, county, or state agencies is beneficial.
  • Strong project management skills are essential.
  • Experience in construction management is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational abilities.
  • Flexibility in work style and the ability to adjust schedules to meet project deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is required.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD/Civil-3D, Microstation/GeoPak, Google-SketchUP Pro, or ARCMap GIS is considered a plus.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary or the ability to obtain one.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate a computer in a standard office environment.
  • Willingness to work outdoors during construction seasons.
  • May require extended periods of standing and walking for construction observation or surveying tasks.
  • Ability to lift objects or containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must adhere to scheduled work hours.
