Job Summary

Blue Origin is seeking a highly skilled Senior Avionics Software Engineer to join our team in developing the avionics software stack for our New Shepard spacecraft. As a key member of our software development team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and continuously improving the safety-critical avionics software system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Software Design and Development: Participate in the design, development, verification, validation, and integration of the avionics software system for our Propulsion Module, Crew Capsule, and Launch Operations systems.
  • Requirements Management: Participate in software and systems requirements management to ensure that the avionics software system meets the necessary safety and performance standards.
  • Trade Studies: Participate in trade studies to support upgrades to compute systems and ensure that the avionics software system is optimized for performance and reliability.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously improve our product, internal tools, and processes to ensure that they are efficient, effective, and aligned with industry best practices.
  • Team Collaboration: Facilitate collaboration between multidisciplinary teams of engineers to develop tools and workflows supporting spaceflight systems.
  • Schedule and Budget Management: Collaborate with a Technical Project Manager to define and commit to schedules and associated budgets.
  • Quality and Safety: Ensure that the avionics software system meets the necessary safety and quality standards, and provide engineering support for our Mission Operations team.
  • Mentorship and Training: Mentor and train incoming software engineers to ensure that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute to the team's success.
Requirements
  • Education: Minimum of a B.S. degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 8+ years of software development experience, with advanced software development skills in C/C++ and Python.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with real-time embedded software, computer networking systems and protocols, build, test, and deployment automation, and software and systems requirements management.
  • Soft Skills: Ability to work independently and as part of a team, high-judgement individual with the ability to undertake large and complex technical projects, and proven ability to meet cost and schedule commitments.
  • Communication Skills: Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: Master's degree (or higher) in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with Linux, Jenkins, Docker, compiler toolchains, and scripting languages, as well as safety-critical vehicle control software development and verification under DO-178.
  • Soft Skills: Experience with application performance monitoring and analysis, unit testing, test driven development, and test automation, as well as instrumentation and control systems, space vehicle launch operations, and DevOps and Agile/Scrum.
