Position Overview

The Dean of Students plays a crucial role in providing administrative oversight for student behavior and conduct, aiming to cultivate a positive educational environment that encourages student development and growth. This position involves managing a specific grade level, addressing student behavioral issues, and supporting educators in implementing effective behavioral management strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a grade-level student support team to implement the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework, ensuring data-driven interventions are in place for behavioral, social-emotional, and academic needs.
  • Foster student achievement by analyzing data and collaborating with various stakeholders to track and promote student progress.
  • Work in conjunction with the Student Support Team (SST) to build positive relationships with students and oversee the execution of individualized support plans, ensuring clear communication with parents and guardians.
  • Address student behavioral management challenges and advocate for positive school behavior through programs such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Manage disciplinary actions, including student suspensions, and provide follow-up communications with relevant parties regarding behavioral and attendance issues.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance student conduct, including peer mediation and restorative practices.
  • Act as a liaison between the school and external stakeholders, including parents, community organizations, and law enforcement, to communicate updates on student behavior policies.
  • Collaborate with the Principal and Central Office staff to identify alternative education programs and assist with student transitions.
  • Support teachers and counselors in establishing student expectations and behavior contracts.
  • Maintain awareness of students receiving specialized services to effectively participate in related meetings.
  • Ensure timely reporting of student behavior and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Promote positive relationships with staff, students, and the community to enhance the school environment.
  • Establish high standards for student behavior and contribute to the development of the student handbook.
  • Oversee safety and security operations on campus, including emergency drills and daily operational tasks.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs to promote a safe and orderly school environment.
  • Lead initiatives aimed at creating a positive and secure learning atmosphere.
  • Identify and address attendance and disciplinary issues in collaboration with counselors and parents.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the effective functioning of the school.

Qualifications

  • Valid Virginia Department of Education license or eligibility to obtain one, with an Administration and Supervision endorsement.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in K-12 education, preferably in middle or high school settings.
  • Proven ability to manage student behavior and implement school-wide behavior management programs.

Clearances

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
