DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION

AQUATIC SAFETY TRAINEE (TEMPORARY)

COMPENSATION RANGE (UPON ACADEMY COMPLETION): $31.49 per hour

INITIAL SALARY: $17.45 per hour

ROLE DESCRIPTION: Engage in a rigorous training program focused on advanced open water lifeguarding and emergency medical response.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in a structured training academy under close supervision.
  • Acquire knowledge of lifesaving techniques and procedures for lake monitoring, victim identification, lake entry, rescue operations, vessel assistance, and enforcement of park regulations.
  • Receive training in field settings to master the procedures for rescuing individuals in peril due to hazardous lake conditions and providing emergency medical assistance.
  • Learn to identify unsafe lake conditions and understand human behavior associated with open water.
  • Gain insights into the enforcement of county regulations.
  • Prepare for certifications in lifesaving, first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Candidate Requirements:

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to swim 1000 meters in 18 minutes or less.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
A valid California Class C Driver's License or the capacity to utilize alternative transportation methods to fulfill job-related essential functions is necessary.
NOTE: A California Class C Driver's License is not required for the current Aquatic Safety Trainee examination but will be mandatory upon successful completion of the training academy for the Aquatic Safety position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 16 years old at the time of the swim assessment.

Vision: Minimum of 20/30 vision in each eye without correction.

Hearing: Must meet specific auditory requirements as outlined.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
4 - Arduous - Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on uneven surfaces. This includes positions that may require extraordinary physical exertion, particularly in safety roles.

Important Information:

EXAMINATION CONTENT: The assessment will consist of a performance test, specifically a swim test of 1,000 meters to be completed in 18 minutes or less. All candidates finishing within the time limit will receive a passing score; those who do not will receive a failing score.
