Hours: Rotating Shifts

  • 1st shift: 6:45am - 3:15pm
  • 2nd shift: 3:00pm - 11:30pm or 1:00pm - 9:30pm
  • 3rd shift: on call
General Overview of the Role
The individual in this position will perform a variety of tasks under supervision, adhering to departmental protocols related to the acquisition, preparation, distribution, and storage of medications, along with providing clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe medication practices.

Pharmacy Technician III candidates are proficient in all responsibilities associated with pharmacy technician levels I and II. This role also involves coordinating technician staff and activities, along with specific advanced responsibilities such as managing Automated Dispensing Cabinets, serving as a Sterile Preparation QA Specialist, Medication Inspection Specialist, and Procurement Specialist.

Key Responsibilities
Coordinator:
  • Execute all job functions of the technicians supervised by this position (i.e., Level I & Level II).
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the technician team in achieving daily tasks; assist in troubleshooting issues.
  • Review and revise policy and procedure documents pertinent to technician job functions.
  • Ensure consistent, compliant, and safe technician practices in accordance with established regulations; maintain quality control in service delivery.
  • Screen, interview, and recommend technician candidates for employment.
  • Contribute to technician performance evaluations based on established standards and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop training materials and ensure comprehensive training for all technicians.
  • Support staff development and skills maintenance initiatives.
  • Engage in division goal planning or quality improvement efforts and ensure adherence to resulting practice expectations by the technician team.
  • Manage technician scheduling and ensure daily job functions are performed effectively.
  • Complete time and attendance records for payroll in accordance with policies.
  • Conduct and facilitate technician meetings to foster information exchange and idea sharing.
  • Oversee supply chain management, ensuring compliance with inventory control procedures and maintenance of non-Duke vendor inventory.
  • Address internal and external customer service inquiries.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Specialist:
  • Adhere to policies and procedures with a comprehensive understanding of the designated area.
  • Review and update policy and procedure documents related to technician responsibilities.
  • Ensure consistent, compliant, and safe technician practices in accordance with established regulations; maintain quality control in service delivery.
  • Manage designated responsibilities while being flexible to assist team members as needed.
  • Monitor designated activities, proactively identify and resolve potential issues, and develop solutions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation supporting designated activities or procedures as required.
  • Create internal reports to assist in ongoing monitoring of designated areas.
  • Serve as a primary training resource for developing competency in specialty areas.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
or
  • Acceptance into pharmacy school.
or
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or healthcare-related experience.
  • Preferred coursework in business/management or position-specific advanced studies, or an equivalent combination.
Experience
  • A minimum of two years of pharmacy technician experience is required.
Licensure and Certification
  • Registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy is required.
  • Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of drug names, medical terminology, and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Proficient in computer applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Critical thinking skills with the capacity to implement effective solutions.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while demonstrating empathy in all interactions.
  • Strong organizational skills, maintaining focus on assigned tasks and utilizing time and resources efficiently to meet job expectations.
  • Physical demands include the ability to perform tasks while standing, reaching, stretching, stooping, and sitting for extended periods; manual dexterity for computer and dispensing functions; ability to lift up to 20 lbs. while walking, stooping, bending, and reaching.
