General Overview of the Role:

The Pharmacy Technician II plays a crucial role in supporting pharmacy operations under supervision, performing a variety of tasks related to the procurement, preparation, distribution, and storage of medications, as well as providing clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe medication use.

Pharmacy Technician II staff are proficient in all tasks associated with Pharmacy Technician I and have met the specific advanced competency requirements for their area.

To maintain this position, individuals must achieve and uphold certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accurately and efficiently follow workflow procedures, including prescription processing, medication preparation, and distribution to patients.
  • Restock automatic dispensing cabinets and anesthesia workstations as necessary.
  • Answer and screen telephone calls, directing them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Handle medications in compliance with departmental, regulatory, and legal standards.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy team members, insurance providers, and customers to resolve issues and ensure accuracy in medication and insurance matters.
  • Assist with basic clinical functions to support the clinical pharmacist, including medication safety initiatives and patient follow-up calls.
  • Operate and provide basic technical support for specialty machinery and software essential for job functions.
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas.
  • Document all assigned safety and quality activities in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Prepare IV solutions using aseptic techniques and compound non-sterile medications as required.
  • Support team goals while managing individual responsibilities.
  • Assist in training new employees and students in job-specific functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent, along with completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program, or acceptance into pharmacy school, or one year of pharmacy or healthcare-related experience.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant experience is required.

Licensure/Certification: Registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy is mandatory. Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is also required.
