Our facility is the largest within the Duke Health system, featuring 1,048 patient beds and 65 operating rooms, along with comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services, including a regional emergency/trauma center and an endo-surgery center.

Work Location: Duke University Hospital - Pediatric Sterile Pharmacy

Working Hours: Rotating shifts (days/evenings) with every other weekend, totaling 40 hours per week.

Position Overview

The Pharmacy Technician I/II plays a crucial role in supporting the pharmacy department by performing various tasks under supervision. Responsibilities include the procurement, preparation, distribution, and storage of medications, as well as providing clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe medication use.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare intravenous admixtures and other sterile products, including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition.
  • Process physician orders, prescriptions, medication carts, and stock requisitions.
  • Assist in cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing compounding equipment.
  • Provide technical support for automated pharmacy equipment.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and documentation.
  • Conduct monthly inspections of medication storage areas and replace outdated or unusable drugs.
  • Monitor quality improvement indicators for departmental performance.
  • Stock medications and supplies, ensuring proper packaging for dispensing.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Pharmacy Technician I: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program, or acceptance into pharmacy school, or one year of relevant healthcare experience.
  • Pharmacy Technician II: Same as above, with a minimum of one year of related experience required.

Licensure and Certification:

  • Pharmacy Technician I: Must register with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy within the first 180 days of employment.
  • Pharmacy Technician II: Registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy is required, along with certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).
