General Overview of the Job Role

Pharmacy Technician II
  • This role involves performing a variety of tasks under supervision, adhering to departmental protocols related to the acquisition, preparation, distribution, and storage of medications, as well as delivering clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe medication practices.
  • Pharmacy Technician II candidates must demonstrate proficiency in all responsibilities associated with Pharmacy Technician I and meet specific advanced competency criteria. Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities
  • Efficiently and accurately execute workflow processes, including prescription management, medication preparation, and distribution to patients.
  • Restock automated dispensing systems and anesthesia workstations as required.
  • Manage incoming calls, directing them to the appropriate personnel as necessary.
  • Handle medications in compliance with departmental, regulatory, and legal standards (e.g., maintaining medication records, removing outdated or unusable medications).
  • Collaborate with pharmacy colleagues, insurance providers, and customers to resolve issues, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution of medication or insurance inquiries.
  • Support various clinical functions alongside the clinical pharmacist (e.g., medication safety initiatives, patient follow-up calls).
  • Operate and provide basic technical support for specialized equipment and software essential for job functions (e.g., carousels, automated dispensing systems, compounders, drug delivery devices, retail pharmacy systems).
  • Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary departments.
  • Complete and document all assigned safety and quality assurance tasks in line with departmental protocols.
  • Prepare IV solutions using aseptic techniques and/or compound non-sterile medications at designated locations.
  • Manage personal responsibilities while assisting team members and contributing to overall team objectives.
  • Engage in various clinical tasks to support the clinical pharmacist (e.g., patient interviews, medication safety initiatives, patient follow-up calls, and data collection for the pharmacist).
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialized machinery, equipment, and software as needed for job functions.
  • Assist in training new employees and students, providing education on job-specific tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
OR
  • Acceptance into pharmacy school.
OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or healthcare-related experience.
Experience
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
  • Registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy is required.
  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is required.
