Hartford, Connecticut, United States State of Connecticut Full time

Overview

Introduction

Are you a seasoned professional in residential remodeling or a contractor specializing in multifamily construction? If so, we invite you to consider a unique volunteer role with the State of Connecticut.

About Us

The State Codes and Standards Committee is a twenty-three member body tasked with the development and adoption of the State Building Code, which is based on nationally recognized model codes. Each member plays a crucial role in the code adoption process, representing their field of expertise while participating in the review and revision of national model codes.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this appointment, candidates must be residents of Connecticut and possess a minimum of ten years of practical experience in their respective fields, specifically in multifamily residential construction, conversion, or remodeling.

Position Responsibilities

Members convene monthly to discuss the progress of building and fire safety code initiatives, address appeals against local and state code officials, and handle complaints regarding local building and fire code enforcement. Participation in the Codes Amendment Subcommittee is also required, where in-depth discussions about new state codes occur, particularly during the intensive 18-month code development cycle.

Committee members may also engage in additional responsibilities, such as serving on panels for appeal hearings and complaints, as well as contributing to various councils like the Building Code Training Council and the Fire Prevention Code Advisory Committee. Meetings are primarily held virtually, with increased frequency during the development of new codes.

Application Process

Interested candidates should create an account with the State of Connecticut or log in to their existing employment dashboard. A Supplemental Questionnaire will be required to gather information on your relevant experience and interests.

Post-Application Expectations

Throughout the application process, candidates may be asked to provide additional documentation to support their qualifications, which may include a cover letter, resume, and references.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least ten (10) years of experience in constructing new buildings or converting existing structures for mid- to large-scale residential use.
  • At least ten (10) years of experience in remodeling residential properties, particularly those with three-family units or larger.

Special Requirements

Members are appointed by the Commissioner of Administrative Services and must adhere to specific regulations outlined in the Connecticut General Statutes. Attendance is mandatory, with members who miss three consecutive meetings or more than fifty percent of meetings in a calendar year deemed to have resigned.
