Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research Full time
Job Overview

Position Summary:

The role involves conducting laboratory experiments and managing small-scale independent research initiatives to advance the scientific goals of a research group. Responsibilities include analyzing experimental outcomes, resolving methodological challenges in experimental protocols, and communicating findings to the supervising researcher.

LABORATORY CONTEXT

The Raguram Lab is in search of a dedicated laboratory technical specialist to contribute to our research endeavors. Our focus is on understanding the mechanisms of intercellular biomolecule transfer, which is crucial for developing innovative strategies for delivering macromolecular therapeutics into cells. We explore how viruses, vesicles, and other cell-derived bioparticles can be loaded with various molecular cargos and how these processes can be optimized to enhance therapeutic delivery. The specialist will collaborate closely with Dr. Aditya Raguram (principal investigator) and will be tasked with executing a diverse array of experiments that support the lab's objectives, including molecular cloning, viral vector production and purification, CRISPR screening, and high-throughput sequencing. Furthermore, the specialist will have the chance to spearhead independent research projects that may lead to first-author publications. This position is particularly suitable for recent graduates seeking to expand their research experience prior to pursuing graduate or medical education.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct laboratory experiments and independent research projects under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
  • Execute standard molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, plasmid preparation, RNA purification, and molecular cloning.
  • Perform mammalian cell culture experiments, including the generation and purification of viral vectors.
  • Maintain and operate laboratory equipment necessary for research activities.
  • Prepare, order, and manage supplies of essential reagents and solutions. Engage with vendors to resolve any equipment or supply-related issues.
  • Document, compile, and assist in interpreting experimental data. Present findings to the supervisor through oral and written reports.
  • Consult relevant scientific literature as required.
  • Undertake additional tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, biological engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of one year of undergraduate research experience.
  • Competence in fundamental laboratory techniques and molecular biology principles is essential.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and possess strong interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience with molecular cloning, tissue culture, and viral vectors is preferred.
  • Familiarity with various scientific databases and publications is advantageous.
