The Residential Treatment Specialist plays a crucial role in providing daily direct care and supervision for children facing emotional and behavioral challenges due to past trauma.

This position is dedicated to ensuring that the fundamental life, educational, and emotional needs of the children are met. The specialist serves as a mentor and role model, showcasing appropriate social skills and relationship-building techniques through a trauma-informed care approach known as the Sanctuary Model, which emphasizes:

Requirements

Level 1 Residential Treatment Specialist:

  • A High School diploma is required; a Bachelor's degree in a human service field is preferred.
  • Must be at least 19 years old with one year of experience working with youth, preferably in a residential setting.
  • Ability to build and maintain nurturing relationships with emotionally challenged children.
  • Proficient in completing written documentation.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and insurance, along with reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds of clients and staff.
  • Willingness to share meal times with clients regularly.

Level 2 Residential Treatment Specialist:

  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred, especially in Psychology, Social Work, or Human Services. Other degrees emphasizing communication and interpersonal skills may be considered.
  • Alternatively, a High School diploma with two or more years of relevant experience in Mental/Behavioral Health or Developmental Disabilities may be accepted.
  • High School diploma with an Associate's Degree or two years of college coursework in relevant fields, plus one year of applicable experience.
Key Responsibilities

Both Level 1 & 2 specialists will:

  • Complete Safe Crisis Management (SCM) training.
  • Participate in Therapeutic Individualized Phases to Success (TIPS) training.
  • Respond therapeutically to aggressive behaviors exhibited by residents.
  • Teach principles of TIPS and maintain necessary documentation.
  • Provide direct care supervision throughout daily routines, assist with educational tasks, and supervise special events.
  • Document incidents accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with team members to achieve treatment goals.
  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist in transporting residents to community activities as needed.
  • Maintain the physical environment and ensure cleanliness.
  • Prepare meals or assist residents in cooking.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The role requires regular standing, walking, and communication. The ability to lift and move items up to 100 pounds may be necessary. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor activities, and the noise level is typically moderate.
