Position Summary:
The Control Room Operator plays a critical role in the management and routine maintenance of power plant systems. This includes High Pressure water tube boilers, steam-driven turbine generators, chillers, wastewater systems, and other auxiliary equipment. The operator is responsible for monitoring operational data and reporting any irregularities. Under general supervision, the operator will utilize a distributed control system to manage all plant equipment and guide floor operators during startup, shutdown, and emergency procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assess and ensure the proper functioning of all machinery.
  2. Adhere to and advocate for established operational practices, utilizing service manuals for guidance.
  3. Operate equipment to fulfill utility customer requirements.
  4. Monitor and document operational metrics such as pressures, temperatures, and fuel usage.
  5. Identify maintenance needs and communicate them to the appropriate personnel.
  6. Observe and interpret data from instrumentation and control systems, reporting findings accordingly.
  7. Understand and apply safety information from material data safety sheets.
  8. Utilize hand and power tools for maintenance and repair tasks on engines, boilers, and associated equipment.
  9. Conduct functional tests on plant systems and components, comparing results against established standards.
  10. Maintain a safe working environment by following safety protocols and addressing unsafe conditions.
  11. Collaborate effectively within a team and follow management directives.
  12. Be punctual and ready to commence work at scheduled times.
  13. Be available for occasional overtime and flexible shift work, including nights and weekends.
  14. Engage diplomatically with colleagues and the public.
  15. Perform necessary housekeeping duties.
  16. Facilitate on-the-job and classroom training, preparing relevant educational materials.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a process-related field, such as chemical processing, refining, or energy generation.
  • 1 to 3 years of hands-on experience in a plant environment, specifically with boilers, chillers, pumps, and water treatment systems.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to obtain certification for wearing a full-face respirator.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and operational manuals.
  • Familiarity with maintaining daily plant logs.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with safe practices in using hand tools and power equipment.
  • Able to work rotating shifts to support operational needs.
  • Capable of recognizing audible alarms and changes in equipment noise levels.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and carry materials, with a capacity of up to 50 pounds.

Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification.
