Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Control Room Operator to join our team. As a Control Room Operator, you will be responsible for operating, servicing, and maintaining steam and electric centrifugal chillers, gas turbine drive ammonia chiller, and steam generators. Your primary duties will include evaluating and maintaining proper operation of all machinery, following and promoting standard practices, and ensuring an uninterrupted steam and chilled water supply to our district heating customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and maintain proper operation of all machinery, including steam and electric centrifugal chillers, gas turbine drive ammonia chiller, and steam generators.
  • Follow and promote standard practices, referring to operation and service manuals as needed.
  • Operate equipment to meet the requirements of district heating and cooling process, ensuring an uninterrupted steam and chilled water supply to our customers.
  • Monitor and record pressures, temperatures, and fuel consumption on operating equipment.
  • Identify and inform appropriate individuals of symptoms requiring maintenance action.
  • Maintain fuel, hydraulic, coolant, and water levels of engines, boilers, expansion tanks, compressors, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Service filters, strainers, cooling tower screens, as needed.
  • Monitor machinery for noise and vibrations, ensuring safe operating conditions and taking immediate corrective action if necessary.
  • Read and interpret information and instructions on material data safety sheets.
  • Apply knowledge of hand and power tools and general repair knowledge to assist in maintenance and repair of engines, boilers, compressors, pumps, and associated equipment.
  • Clean and maintain engines, chillers, and other equipment, performing general cleaning in the chiller/boiler room area.
  • Perform water testing.
  • May be required to obtain certification to wear a full-face respirator.
  • Perform and promote work in a safe manner, according to established safety procedures, and report or rectify any unsafe conditions.
  • Display willingness to work in a team environment and follow directions and instructions from members of management.
  • Be present and ready to begin working at the designated time.
  • Be available to work occasional scheduled or unscheduled overtime, as required.
  • Be willing and able to work rotating shifts, including holidays, nights, and weekends.
  • Have the ability to interface diplomatically with other employees and the public.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 3-5 years' experience in a process-related field, such as chemical industry, refinery, heating, generation, or any that would require a demonstrated aptitude for applying skills to an involved or complicated process.
  • 1-3 years' journeyman-level experience in a plant environment with boilers, chillers, pumps, compressors, cooling towers, and water treatment.
  • Preferred: Technical trade school training in one of the skilled trades.
  • Experience with industrial boilers and associated systems within a control room environment.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain certification to wear a full-face respirator.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, manuals, and drawings, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of daily plant logs.
  • Familiar with basic Microsoft Office products.
  • Must have experience with sound safety practices using hand tools and power equipment related to job assignments.
  • Able to work rotating-shift assignments to support plant operations.
  • Ability to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment, and portable radio communication.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and carry materials up and down stairs, with the capacity of lifting 70 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license.
