Job Overview

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems Specialist at a senior level is responsible for facilitating routine and rapid-response inspections using small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) across the Dominion Energy operational landscape. This role will also involve conducting sUAS training, providing consultancy, and processing data. The position is primarily based in Richmond, VA, with frequent travel required across the Dominion Energy Virginia territory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safety-first approach in all operations.
  • Design flight plans, verify NOTAMS, assess weather conditions, and coordinate airspace integration with relevant agencies or private property owners.
  • Conduct pre-flight briefings and perform safety risk assessments prior to missions, along with after-action reviews post-flight.
  • Oversee inspection projects that may vary in scope and impact on the department or business unit.
  • Manage company vehicles and high-value unmanned systems.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all FAA Part 107 sUAS regulations.
  • Implement UAS operations in line with Dominion Energy protocols.
  • Address complex challenges and offer innovative perspectives on existing solutions.
  • Lead training sessions and serve as a resource for less experienced colleagues.
  • Collaborate with team members, partners, and clients on various projects.
  • Act as the company's representative on-site, delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Perform minor integration and maintenance tasks on the aircraft.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant surveying experience.
  • Licensed Surveyor in Virginia.
  • Experience in terrestrial surveying.
  • Proficiency in PLS CAD.
  • Familiarity with ALTA/As-built surveys.
  • Experience in topographic surveys.
  • Extensive knowledge of various surveying and data collection technologies.
  • Possession of a 14 CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Expertise in using sUAS-related post-processing software, including GIS applications.
  • Ability to operate precise instruments with coordination.
  • Capability to instruct and guide others through formal training and daily interactions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn.
  • Valid driver's license to operate a company vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with surveying and AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with Pix4D Mapper.
  • Experience in LiDAR collection and processing.
  • Knowledge of aerial mapping collection and post-processing.
  • Experience with GPS control.
  • Proficiency in Global Mapper.
  • Experience working with Pointcloud data.
  • Familiarity with ESRI software.
  • Background in sUAS and other robotic operations (submersibles, ROVs).
  • Private Pilot or Commercial Pilot License with Instrument Rating.
  • Experience with sUAS fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft.

Education Requirements:

A degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of the preferred level of education: Associate Degree.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Required: 14 CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate; Valid driver's license.
  • Preferred: Private Pilot or Commercial Pilot License with Instrument Rating.

Working Conditions:

  • Travel: Up to 25%.
  • Office Work Environment: Up to 25%.
  • Loud Noise: Up to 25%.
  • Outdoor Work: 76-100%.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs independently; work involves traversing through brush, heavily wooded areas, and uneven terrain; standing for extended periods; outdoor work in various weather conditions.
