San Francisco, United States ReThink Media Full time

ReThink Media seeks a student or recent graduate with an interest in media and survey analysis for Fall 2024 to contribute to our communications, media, and opinion research on social justice issues.

ReThink Media is a unique, nonprofit organization that places media and communications at the center of our movement building agenda. We strengthen the collaborative media and communications capacity of state and national advocacy groups; increase the “voice share” of their spokespeople; and provide in-depth media, messaging, and opinion research to inform movement strategy. Read more about our values.

We focus on long-term engagement with our advocacy partners and with the issues we take on—all driven by a belief that the stronger the groups are across an issue sector and the tighter their collaboration, the more likely they are to win real and lasting policy victories. At present, ReThink works in three distinct yet interconnected issue areas: the protection of civil rights; strengthening our democracy; and achieving a more constructive foreign and national security policy.

The Research & Analysis Team analyzes media coverage of our issues, conducts message testing and public opinion research, tracks public polling, and manages data about our programs’ impact.

Description

The Research & Analysis intern will report to the Associate Director of Research & Analysis and work closely with other staff. You will be expected to attend and participate in monthly staff meetings and you will have the opportunity to meet and interact with ReThink staff at every level of the organization.

Ideal candidates will be current or recent graduate students, or advanced undergraduates (third-year or later) with research and analysis skills, an interest in advocacy work, and a demonstrated commitment to one or more of the policy issues ReThink Media works on.

Principal Duties

Projects will be dependent on the successful candidate’s skills and interests. These may include:

  • Analyzing and reporting on public opinion survey results.
  • Assisting with the analysis (quantitative and/or qualitative) of media coverage about issues that ReThink works on.
  • Monitoring publicly available opinion polls about our issues, including writing a weekly digest for ReThink staff and partners, and archiving them in ReThink’s poll tracking database.
  • Assisting in designing PowerPoint presentation decks.
  • Participating in presentations of research findings to advocacy groups.
  • Writing code to automate and streamline common data collection and analysis tasks.
  • Creating interactive dashboards using Google Data Studio, Tableau, R Shiny or other tools to communicate our research findings.
  • Building classifiers and machine learning models to analyze the content of news articles.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • Excellent research skills, including thoroughness, attention to detail, and critical thinking.
  • Interest in using research and data to impact social movements and public policy.
  • Ease with Google Docs, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (or other similar applications).
  • Strong writing/editing skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote work environment.
Desired but not required
  • Major in Political Science, Statistics, Communication/Linguistics, or related fields.
  • Interest and/or training in media analysis, messaging/framing or communications.
  • Familiarity with polling, surveys, or other forms of public opinion research.
  • Coursework or experience with qualitative research, such as content analysis.
  • Experience with data visualization, and data visualization applications (e.g., Tableau).
  • Familiarity with programming languages (specifically Python or R).
Location and Wage

This internship will be remote and part-time (10-16 hours a week), for a three-month term. The specific schedule is negotiable based on the intern’s course schedule. The starting wage for this position is $18.67 per hour. We are also open to working with students and professors to craft projects for credit.
