At Southwest Research Institute, we are seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join our team in the field of seismic hazard analysis. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in conducting probabilistic seismic hazard assessments for critical facilities, both within the U.S. and abroad.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with geologists, geophysicists, and geotechnical engineers to develop and implement probabilistic seismic hazard assessments for commercial nuclear facilities.
- Evaluate technical information regarding seismic sources from earthquake records, paleoseismology, structural geology, and neotectonics.
- Integrate probabilistic seismic hazard findings into engineering and risk assessment, working closely with a multidisciplinary team.
- Develop and maintain state-of-the-art software and methodologies to assess seismic source and ground motion models, and to evaluate the uncertainties associated with these models.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in seismology, earthquake engineering, and hazard analysis, and apply new methodologies to project work.
- Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences, conveying complex concepts in an accessible manner.
- Provide expert consultation to clients, regulatory authorities, and internal teams on seismic hazard assessments.
- Participate in business development efforts to identify new opportunities for seismic hazard analysis services.
- Requires a PhD in Seismology, Geophysics, or a related field, with a strong background in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis.
- Proven experience in seismic source models, including active faults and earthquake records, is essential.
- Proficiency in software tools such as OpenQuake, SeisRiskIII, and other industry-standard applications is required.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar is necessary.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and manage projects independently is critical.
- U.S. Citizenship or a valid U.S. Permanent Residency is required, with a minimum of 5 years of residency.
- A valid/clear driver's license is required for travel to project sites.
