U.S. Water Services Corporation is a well-established and diverse water and wastewater utility organization specializing in utility maintenance, operations, engineering and construction services. U.S. Water is a fast paced and rapidly expanding company headquartered in New Port Richey, Florida with a staff of over 800 employees in twenty states.

This position is located in Galena, IL.

The Collection/Distribution Operator will perform a variety of operation and maintenance work related to a public collection and water distribution systems. The operator will provide customer service to customers/residents related to overflows, sewer stoppages, pressure and water quality complaints, and leaks. The operator may interface with contractors and consultants, representing the needs and interests of US Water. The operator must reside within 45 minutes of the water treatment plant and be available for on-call shifts and be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Duties

Specific job assignments may include some or all of the following:

  • Conduct distribution system flushing.
  • Perform hydrant inspection and maintenance.
  • Perform valve inspection.
  • Conduct booster pumping station maintenance.
  • Maintain cross-connection control.
  • Check lift stations.
  • Repair water line and force main leaks.
  • Monitor, plan and organize the collection of required regulatory system samples.
  • Collect plant and field samples and transport to laboratory to be analyzed.
  • Analyze distribution system samples and coordinate system changes and modifications with plant chief.
  • Conduct meter reading for both customer and master meters.
  • Monitor SCADA system.
  • Answer water quality complaints and communications.
  • Respond to sewer backups and lift station alarms.
  • Set customer appointments for pressure, leak, and meter checks.
  • Be responsible for care and maintenance of assigned company vehicle.

Working Conditions and Physical Activities

  • Work is performed in an indoor/outdoor industrial environment, near moving mechanical parts. The operator may be exposed to fumes, pathogens, airborne particles and various chemicals, some of which may be toxic. The operator is exposed to various conditions including excessive noise, extreme heat or cold.
  • Lift and handle objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Work on a rotating weekend and emergency on-call duty schedule. Subject to mandatory overtime on an as needed basis.
  • Employ full range of body movements including stooping, twisting, kneeling, bending, leaning, reaching, climbing (heights), stretching, and working in awkward positions.
  • Perform strenuous physical labor and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Utilize communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Read and log both analog and digital information.
  • Understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Perform math skills and use a calculator.
  • Properly utilize personal protection equipment as required by appropriate safety protocols.
  • Climb up and down vertical ladders or staircases up to 40 feet.
  • Lift loads of fifty pounds at least chest high.
  • Walk several miles a day.
  • Operate both small and large valves.
  • Employ sound judgment when performing duties.
  • Work effectively even when unsupervised

Knowledge: Basic knowledge of the operations of water and wastewater utility systems, SCADA control, consumption forecasting principles, water and wastewater treatment plant concepts, basic water/wastewater theory and principles (hydraulics, gradients, etc.), distribution system principles, operations, control processes and maintenance requirements, basic knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to water/wastewater system operation, personal computers including spreadsheet and word processing software applications.

Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; some knowledge of computer and software applications, read blue prints and maps, prepare logs and reports, ability to understand and interpret complex data concerning the flow of water into and throughout the water system, including raw water supply, treatment plants, pumping stations, treated water reservoirs, reuse system, and wastewater system; ability to handle multiple complex situations, solve system problems, coordinate resources; work shifts and nights; and work overtime, standby, and/or callback duty.

Required License, Certificate or Credentials, Experience

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Experience operating heavy equipment
  • Experience operating hand and power tools
