About this role

The Director, Indigenous Affairs supports the development of strategies and programs for Indigenous Affairs and leads the implementation of these strategies globally.

This role within the Social Performance function leads Newmont's strategic approach to Indigenous relations and provides support to operational leadership. The Indigenous Affairs discipline, as with the rest of Social Performance is designed as Enterprise Guidance. This role is accountable for thought leadership, program development and guidelines for Indigenous community affairs that enables operational leadership to implement social performance programs. The role supports operational leadership to develop Business Unit (BU) and site-specific social performance plans for Indigenous Affairs and performance objectives and targets over time.

Your role will consist of

Growth Strategy/Governance

  • Reimagine, lead, manage, and continuously improve the Newmont Global Center for Indigenous Community Relations including the Indigenous Peoples Working Group established to support Newmont workforce who work with Indigenous partners.
  • Develop a 3-to-5-year strategy for Indigenous affairs
  • Develop a 3-to-5-year strategy for cultural heritage management.
  • Establish systems and processes to monitor Newmont's relationships with Indigenous peoples and local communities and enable the holistic analysis of Indigenous stakeholders and partners across functional platforms.
  • Provide input to the Newmont governance framework to integrate key Indigenous Peoples topics, including Indigenomics, economic participation, cultural heritage and human rights into business decisions throughout the asset lifecycle.
  • Act as the Global Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support operational leadership align their approach to agreement-making, negotiations, and implementation management with Indigenous partner communities.
  • Lead enterprise participation in Business Unit (BU) and operational Reconciliation Action Plan development and execution.
  • Provide input to the Social Performance teams who are working with Business Units and sites to establish detailed assessments and reports regarding land access, opportunities and challenges in relation to Indigenous traditional territories.
  • Monitor, analyze and provide performance reports for Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Operations Leadership Team (OLT), and Board advising on current state and risks pertaining to Indigenous affairs.
  • Support Operational leadership and Business Units in developing actions to achieve public targets and commitments for Indigenous employment/development and procurement/supplier development working with the People and Supply Chain functions.
  • Monitor, analyze, and support advocacy on relevant external trends and legislative movements within relevant jurisdictions.
  • Support BUs in implementing requirements at operations and their engagement with external stakeholders on Indigenous Affairs, Cultural Heritage and Human Rights matters (as required).
  • Represent Newmont on industry bodies and external other platforms participating in external groups and development of collaboration or partnerships to strengthen Newmont's performance and leadership in Indigenous Affairs, Cultural Heritage Management and Human Rights.

Operations Excellence

Monitor safety and sustainability events, risks, and performance that impact or could impact Indigenous relations or human rights to identify gaps and action plans, that address performance improvements.

Consolidate reporting on performance metrics, KPIs, targets across the BUs with regards to Indigenous affairs.

Support implementation and monitoring of Risk Management System for BU Indigenous Affairs, Cultural Heritage and Human Rights risks.

Safety and Sustainability

Oversee the improvement activities associated with risk working with the BUs and sites to take appropriate actions.

Support external reporting – Annual Sustainability Report, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Corporate Human Rights Benchmark, etc.

Provide input into audit and assurance program as it relates to Indigenous Peoples, Cultural Heritage and Human Rights, including coaching teams on improved performance and gap management.

Support the variance process for operations, projects and studies that do not align with required standards and guidelines who seek a variance because there are no affiliated or interested Indigenous stakeholders.

Monitor performance to reduce risk exposure and recommend improvement activities as appropriate.

People

Support the knowledge and skill development for relevant practitioners and company personnel on topics related to Indigenous Affairs, Cultural Heritage, and Human Rights.

Provide expertise to the Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity function to support line management develop and maintain culture of inclusion and equity for Indigenous workforce and suppliers.

Support line management and HR in providing culturally relevant programs for Indigenous workforce preparation, attraction, retention and development.

Coach social performance, exploration, projects, and other stakeholder staff to improve knowledge skill development, and successful identification, budgeting, and execution of site-specific legal and other Indigenous Affairs, Cultural Heritage and Human Rights programs.

Commercial

Support development of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts at Enterprise, BUs and sites.

Consolidate reports against plans for costs, headcount and capital spend that supports Indigenous Affairs strategies at BUs and Center delivery on purpose

Align to and reconcile against site KPIs and metrics for Indigenous Affairs, Cultural Heritage and Human Rights management for early studies, generative exploration, closure, legacy and tailings.

Working conditions and location

The salary range offered for this role is USD $132, ,000. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company's performance and their own individual performance.
