ROLE SUMMARY

The Vice President of Environmental Strategy is tasked with leading, inspiring, advising, developing, and executing strategies, tactics, and programs that will propel Alterra Mountain Company's environmental sustainability objectives both internally and externally. This role will collaborate with the Legal & Social Responsibility Team to position Alterra Mountain Company as a frontrunner in climate solutions. The VP of Environmental Strategy is an innovative, self-motivated, strategic thinker adept at developing, educating, evolving, and implementing a comprehensive corporate sustainability program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

General Duties
  • Enhance a forward-thinking corporate sustainability program that can be effectively executed at all organizational levels; communicated internally and externally; aligned with industry standards; and impactful on climate.
  • Oversee the execution of functional strategy, operational direction, and ongoing evaluation of a multi-year sustainability strategic plan, in alignment with Enterprise Strategy and individual resort/regional strategies.
  • Promote company policies and objectives on sustainability through advocacy at local, regional, state, and federal levels for the benefit of the business and the community.
  • Research and implement sustainability best practices for the establishment and development of consistent metrics, based on quantitative and qualitative data. Identify and monitor specific, measurable, and achievable goals, anticipating regular reports to Executive Leadership.
  • Provide continuous guidance and education on a wide range of company policies and procedures.
  • Act as a consultant to various divisions, including Marketing, Communications, Procurement, Hospitality, Development, Financial Reporting, and Operations, to integrate enterprise-level sustainability initiatives as required.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Social Responsibility team in a cohesive, engaged, and team-oriented manner, fostering the professional development of others.
  • Address sustainability issues related to corporate philanthropy, employee relations, employee housing, policy and government relations, marketing, communications, third-party suppliers, and other functions.
  • Lead the sustainability team and establish a seamless communication and implementation strategy.
  • Set guidelines and benchmarks for the company's environmental impact and SBTi goals.
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to procure 100% of electricity from renewable sources in alignment with RE100.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal environmental regulations. Stay informed on potential future policies and regulations to incorporate best practices in business efficiently and effectively.
  • Manage budget responsibilities for sustainability initiatives.
  • Serve as an enthusiastic, inclusive, diplomatic, culturally competent, and innovative strategic thinker who can motivate and inspire best sustainability practices, both internally and externally.
  • A passion for the outdoor/ski industry is advantageous.
  • Travel as necessary to fulfill the above responsibilities.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of relevant professional experience in a dynamic, high-performance business environment, with at least 3 years in a management role.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Environmental Studies, Business, Public Policy, or a related field; a Master's Degree and Professional certifications (LEED, FSA/SASB, GRI, WELL, etc.) are highly preferred.
  • A proven history of effective corporate sustainability leadership, program development, and implementation at an organizational level.
  • A demonstrated ability to build, maintain, and effectively leverage external relationships with consultants, partners, and related organizations to advance sustainability strategies and initiatives.
  • Technical expertise in carbon reporting and reduction strategies, including experience with corporate certification programs (i.e., GHG Protocol, CDP, GRI, SASB, B-Corp, SBTi).
  • Experience in energy efficiency programs, carbon offset purchases, sustainable investment and financial programs, and green infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing innovative and complex business systems to further implement and expand sustainability best practices.
  • Experience leading, managing, and/or participating in affinity groups or employee resource groups.
  • Experience articulating a business case to key stakeholders, including executive teams, boards of directors, and community leaders.
  • Experience with departmental and project-based financial and budgeting responsibilities.
  • Experience in corporate social responsibility is preferred.
  • Experience supporting renewable energy procurement.
  • Experience implementing internal carbon pricing.

The salary range for this position reflects the low and high end of the compensation spectrum for this role. Actual salaries may vary based on factors such as experience, education, training, location, and responsibilities.
