Competitive Pay Ranges

Annual salaries ranging from $159,330 to $204,636 for the SES.3 level and from $191,220 to $245,544 for the SES.4 level illustrate our commitment to fair compensation.

Job Description

We have exciting opportunities for Mathematical Physics Research Scientists to join a dynamic team engaged in decision support research across various mission areas. In this role, you will delve into data modeling, machine learning foundations, optimal control, and computational methods for scientific and national security applications. This position is within the Physics Division/Applied Physics Section in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Analytics Group.

Successful candidates will be hired at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level based on their knowledge and experience. Additional responsibilities (detailed below) will be assigned to those hired at the higher level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply mathematical and computational techniques to advance scientific and national security missions.
  • Conduct analytical and statistical modeling, numerical analysis, signal processing, computer simulations, and data visualization.
  • Utilize various computing architectures, including high-performance computing systems, for project implementation.
  • Engage in self-driven research, stay abreast of technical advancements in specific areas, publish research in reputable journals, and present findings at conferences and technical meetings.
  • Collaborate within interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to meet mission-driven objectives within specified timelines.
  • Carry out additional assigned duties.

Additional Responsibilities at SES.4 Level

  • Initiate and lead new research projects leveraging scientific expertise, secure external funding, and contribute to program development.
  • Drive the creation of novel mathematical, statistical, and computational models to achieve project objectives.
  • Provide project updates and briefings to sponsors, LLNL visitors, and senior management.
  • Effectively oversee and deliver impactful contributions across multiple technical projects involving various lab organizations.
  • Mentor students, postdocs, and junior staff in research and technical proficiencies.

Qualifications

  • Hold or be able to obtain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
  • Possess a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, or a related field, or a comparable combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrate expertise in research areas such as theoretical cosmology, statistical physics, computational modeling, high-performance computing, or signal processing.
  • Show the ability to conduct independent research, innovate solutions, and achieve significant results in complex scientific problems.
  • Exhibit advanced communication skills to work effectively in diverse teams, publish technical papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
  • Present strong interpersonal skills to interact with professionals from various backgrounds.

Additional Qualifications at the SES.4 Level

  • Proven experience in leading scientific research projects, securing research funding, and developing innovative solutions demonstrated through publications or past projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, engage with sponsors, visitors, and senior management effectively.
  • Experience in recruiting and guiding students, postdocs, or staff members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in organizing scientific research teams, including software management and communication.
  • Background in nonlinear dynamical systems research.
  • Skill in effectively communicating scientific and technical findings to a broad audience.
  • Experience within the U.S. national security landscape.

This role mandates a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance, emphasizing our commitment to national security.
