El Segundo, California, United States ABL Space Systems Full time

ABL Space Systems is driven by the vision that in ten years, missions to space will launch every day from around the world. We've set out to assure global access to space through the development of a low-cost launch vehicle and a modular ground system, RS1 and GS0.

Behind our business model is an exceptional team. Engineers, technicians and operators at ABL thrive on creating simple yet effective systems to tackle the challenge that space launch presents.

Launch is just the beginning. Join ABL in paving the way for the next-generation space platform.

Head of Ground System Builds

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as the Head of Ground System Builds. The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers and technicians in the fabrication and assembly of the ground support equipment required for launch (GS0).

GS0 is our launch system that can be produced and validated in factory environments before being shipped and deployed to any launch site in the world. It's modular and adaptable, needing only a flat concrete pad and a small team to activate the new facility. You will coordinate closely with hardware and avionics engineering teams to produce streamlined, cross-functional systems that are simple to maintain, improve, and deploy. This is a fast-paced, ever-evolving work environment where no two days are going to be the same.

Travel between sites may be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians in builds and refurbishments of ground systems to support launch needs
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, procurement, and operations, to ensure seamless integration of ground support systems
  • Drive innovation in ground support equipment design, championing design for manufacturing and operations changes
  • Ensure compliance with stringent safety standards, regulatory requirements, and mission-specific constraints throughout the equipment development lifecycle
  • Oversee the fabrication, assembly, and testing of ground support equipment, optimizing processes to meet project milestones and quality objectives
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives to improve manufacturing efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure quality
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 2+ years in a quality leadership role
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and certification processes for aerospace hardware, such as range requirements
  • Extensive experience in aerospace engineering and project management, with a proven track record of successfully delivering complex projects on time and within budget
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams to achieve ambitious goals

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in CAD software, simulation tools, and other engineering software applications
  • Deep understanding of aerospace ground support systems, including launch pad infrastructure, fueling systems, and payload integration hardware
  • Dedicated team player who's excited about ABL's mission

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to use a computer to complete assignments
  • Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in person, by phone and telepresence
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will typically work in an office environment
  • Critical thinking: ABL Employees understand the "why" behind all design decisions, operational events and test outcomes
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity: ABL Employees must be comfortable defining their own pathway to an objective
  • End-to-end ownership: projects are delivered fully complete and ready for flight
