The Space Domain Superiority Directorate, part of the Special Programs Division, supports a wide range of Space Domain Awareness and Combat Power missions. We address the entire threat response chain, from Space Domain Awareness to the multidomain effects necessary for achieving space superiority. Our programs encompass significant system acquisitions for various ground and space segments, future architecture definition at the data/software/hardware levels, and ongoing research and technology development aimed at the continuous evolution of space warfare capabilities.

In the role of Senior Satellite Systems Engineer (Senior Project Engineer-Systems Engineering - Acquisition and Systems Engineering), you will support advanced concepts and rapid response initiatives. This position involves contributing to the development of solutions for complex challenges and implementing essential space control capabilities to ensure our nation's space superiority. Your work will be integral to delivering space programs within a closely integrated program office that includes military, Aerospace, UARC, FFRDC, and SETA personnel.

Work Model

This position requires on-site presence at our designated location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the acquisition and integration of satellite systems, from initial concept through deployment and operational phases.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) and X-Labs, to support system development.
  • Define system requirements and specifications aligned with mission objectives and customer needs.
  • Conduct trade studies and performance analyses to optimize satellite system design and architecture.
  • Coordinate with government contracting officers to procure necessary components and subsystems.
  • Define criteria, participate in, and assess design reviews, risk assessments, and mitigation planning.
  • Manage and collaborate with contractors and other FFRDCs on test plans and procedures for satellite integration, testing, and validation.
  • Provide system engineering and technical expertise to resolve integration issues during development and operations.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and industry best practices throughout the acquisition process.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with customer senior management and all levels of customer/contractor staff.

Qualifications for Success

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of systems engineering experience focused on space systems development and satellite acquisition.
  • Experience in spacecraft development, including design, build, integration, and testing.
  • Strong knowledge of satellite subsystems, such as payload, power, thermal, and attitude control systems.
  • Experience in assessing designs for Mission Assurance.
  • Current Top Secret/SCI clearance required, issued by the US government.
  • Ability to obtain additional security accesses.
  • Experience in building and maintaining effective teams and fostering good working relationships with multiple government partners and contractors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills—clear, concise, and professional.
  • Willingness to travel moderately.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be advantageous if you possess one or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated organizational and project leadership skills with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with satellite procurement processes, including the development of acquisition documents (RFP, SOW, TRD).
  • Experience in Agile acquisition of space systems (e.g., bus, components, software).
  • Experience in Space Operations, including Launch and Early Operations, nominal operations, mission operations, and end-of-life operations.
  • Capability to identify and mitigate risks effectively.
  • Dedication and commitment to mission objectives.
  • Experience in the Space Control Mission Area.
