El Segundo, California, United States The Aerospace Corporation Full time

The Aerospace Corporation stands as a pivotal ally to the nation's space initiatives, tackling complex challenges and delivering unparalleled technical proficiency. As the steward of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we engage comprehensively across the spectrum of space—offering innovative solutions that encompass satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil, and commercial clients.

At Aerospace, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace where all employees can unite in our shared passion and mission—contributing to a cause far greater than ourselves.

The Space Domain Superiority Directorate, within the Special Programs Division, undertakes a wide range of Space Domain Awareness and Combat Power missions. Our efforts span the entire threat response chain, from Space Domain Awareness functions to the multi-domain effects essential for achieving space superiority. These initiatives include significant system acquisitions for various ground and space segments, future architecture definition at the data/software/hardware levels, and ongoing research and technology development to advance space warfighting capabilities.

In the role of a Senior Satellite Systems Engineer, you will support the Advanced Concepts and Space Safari branches. The Space Safari program office is dedicated to the Tactically Responsive Space mission, providing rapid response solutions for the warfighter to adapt to evolving operational space conditions. You will be integral to a team focused on devising solutions for the most demanding challenges and implementing essential space control capabilities to ensure our nation's space superiority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the acquisition and integration of satellite systems, from initial concept through deployment and operational phases.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including Engineering and Technology Group (ETG) and X-Labs, to facilitate system development.
  • Establish system requirements and specifications aligned with mission objectives and client needs.
  • Conduct trade studies and performance analyses to enhance satellite system design and architecture.
  • Coordinate with government contracting officers to secure necessary components and subsystems.
  • Define criteria, participate in, and evaluate design reviews, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies.
  • Manage collaborations with contractors and other FFRDCs on test plans and procedures for satellite integration, testing, and validation.
  • Provide system engineering and technical expertise to address system integration challenges during development and operational phases.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory standards and industry best practices throughout the acquisition lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain positive, enduring working relationships with senior management and all levels of customer/contractor personnel.

Qualifications for Success

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of systems engineering experience, particularly in space systems development and satellite acquisition.
  • Experience in spacecraft development, including design, construction, integration, and testing.
  • Strong understanding of satellite subsystems, such as payload, power, thermal, and attitude control systems.
  • Experience in evaluating designs for Mission Assurance.
  • Current Top Secret/SCI clearance is required, issued by the US government.
  • Ability to obtain additional security clearances as necessary.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain effective teams and foster strong working relationships with various government partners and contractors.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills—clear, concise, and professional.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be advantageous if you possess one or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated organizational and project leadership capabilities with the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with satellite procurement processes, including the development of acquisition documents (RFP, SOW, TRD).
  • Familiarity with Agile acquisition methodologies for space systems (e.g., bus, components, software).
  • Experience in Space Operations, including Launch and Early Operations, nominal operations, mission operations, and end-of-life operations.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks effectively.
  • Commitment to mission success.
  • Experience in the Space Control Mission Area.

We offer a competitive compensation package that rewards performance and recognizes the value you bring to our organization. The salary range for this position is determined by various factors, including education, experience, knowledge, and skills.
