Position OverviewRole Summary

Are you driven by the desire to innovate and enhance the capabilities of US space systems?

Do you thrive in developing advanced space system concepts that challenge conventional designs?

If this resonates with you, we invite you to consider joining our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

Our team comprises dedicated engineers and scientists committed to delivering exceptional capabilities to the Space Force. We prioritize integrity and trust within our organization. We are in search of a Satellite Systems Architect to transform next-generation Department of Defense (DoD) space systems into reality. In collaboration with the US Space Force and their Space Systems Command (SSC), you will facilitate the transition of payload concepts from initial development to operational deployment. Your role will involve identifying innovative concepts and capabilities to prototype and validate as systems evolve into operational status. As a vital member of our team, you will engage in various initiatives supporting SSC, including concept formulation, modeling and simulation, and system testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engineering support that advances a program through the critical phases of the engineering lifecycle: from concept initiation to system implementation.
  • Create reference designs, concepts, and analyses to aid in system development and maintenance.
  • Establish system-level requirements.
  • Define interface requirements.
  • Develop operational concepts (conops).
  • Contribute to or oversee the creation of system-level or mission-level analyses.
  • Ensure that system interface requirements align with operational needs and are executed effectively.
  • Formulate innovative operational concepts and use cases; assess their influence on mission success.
  • Identify and evaluate risks while developing mitigation strategies throughout the system lifecycle.

Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Possess over 10 years of experience with satellite systems, payloads, or ground architectures.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in systems engineering and analysis fundamentals, including requirements definition, interface understanding between hosts and payloads, system test design and execution, and risk management.
  • Maintain an active Secret security clearance and be eligible for TS/SCI level clearance. Selection will involve a government security clearance investigation, and you must meet the criteria for access to classified information, including U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the MILSATCOM domain or NC3 (Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications).
  • Familiarity with satellite mission operations, encompassing launch, in-orbit testing, daily operations, and anomaly resolution.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of the system design process to address challenges throughout the acquisition lifecycle.
  • Possess a Master’s degree in engineering, physical science, or a related technical field.
  • Have over 10 years of experience with satellite systems, payloads, or ground control system architectures.
  • Hold an active Top Secret security clearance or a current Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI).
