Job Summary: The Mama Lere Hearing School at Vanderbilt (MLHS) teaches children with hearing loss to listen, talk, sing and read. We have the unique ability to provide all hearing healthcare services in one facility. Our services include audiological, speech-language, and educational evaluations and individualized educational plans. We feel privileged to be able to enhance the quality of life of young children with hearing loss.

The Mama Lere Hearing School at Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center is seeking a compassionate and experienced Teacher of the Deaf II. In this rewarding role the Teacher will evaluate, educate, tutor, counsel, and provide care to students with and without hearing loss to develop spoken language and listening skills using a reverse mainstreaming model. Provide independent educational services as assigned and participate actively in identifying and conducting quality improvement activities. Collaborate with the student educational team to meet student care needs, outcomes, and system objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Completes documentation in a manner consistent with medical center and department policies. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Document and report information consistent with school-legal policies and professional standards, using language appropriate to the use of the documentation and the audience/recipients.
* Consistently meet standards for timely filing of documentation (i.e., attendance logs turned in daily).
* Document to ensure reimbursement of services provided.
* Provides educational services in a manner consistent with compliance requirements, medical center policies, TN Department of Education standards, and the department's financial goals. Plan and implements developmentally appropriate auditory-oral curriculum and activities according to the child's IFSP/IEP, NAEYC guidelines, TN Department of Education standards, Options Standards, and Center policy. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Meet child-contact hour standards.
* Make judicious decisions relative to department funds and resources.
* Prepares unit plans with school team members.
* Prepares weekly and daily lesson plans with assigned classroom team members.
* Posts unit and lesson plans each time they are updated.
* Prepares and distributes classroom newsletter with each unit.
* Submits reports necessary for compliance with licensing agencies and agency contracts.
* Plans activities in advance in order to assure that needed supplies and materials are prepared with assigned classroom team members.
* Modifies lesson plans if the student is not deriving benefits.
* Incorporate new information gained, from ongoing dialogue with student, family, and student educational team.
* Plan and coordinate field trips as appropriate to your unit plans. Secure appropriate releases from families prior to the field trip.
* Ensure that all equipment used by the children as well as the classroom systems is functional. Troubleshoot devices if needed.
* Completes educational assessments using appropriate testing methods and equipment for the student type, diagnosis, and admissions requirements to the school. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Obtain information pertinent to the assessment as needed for the IEP/IFSP.
* Administer and score formal and informal tests and assessments for each grading period or as stipulated on the IEP/IFSP.
* Analyze and interpret the test and assessment results.
* Report findings to the student, family, school system, and other members of the student educational team in a timely manner and consistent with FERPA standards.
* Evaluate and incorporate research findings into the assessment and educational plan for each student.
* Develop teacher made tests, as needed, to document progress made on the IEP/IFSP.
* Formulates IEP/IFSP goals to address deficits, student/family areas of concerns, and other members of the student educational team concerns. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Write functional and measurable IEP/IFSP goals and objectives based upon the results of the assessment and input from the student educational team and family. These goals need to be in the following domains: auditory, speech, language, cognition, social skills, self-help, motor, and any others determined to be appropriate.
* Identify and recommend additional/alternative services when appropriate.
* Develop goals consistent with the family's goals and resources.
* Apply evidence based practices in the educational setting.
* Maintains a clean, safe, orderly classroom environment which contributes to the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth of children. (Per NAEYC, JACHO, OSHA, Risk Management, and Center policies). Demonstrates the ability to:
* Monitors classroom and playground for cleanliness and safety.
* Cleans classrooms according to established policies.
* Complies with center cleaning and sanitizing procedures.
* Limits excessive clutter in classroom.
* Arrives punctually for work in order to maintain appropriate adult-child ratios.
* Facilitates discussions with children throughout the day in order to enhance language development.
* Monitors tone and volume of own voice to ensure respectful interactions with children, parents, and co-workers.
* Assures that children are supervised at all times. Monitors clean-up times and transitions in order to assure the safety and security of all children.
* Positions self in classroom and on playground in order to interact with and guide children.
* Provide basic care for children such as feeding, personal hygiene, snack/lunch, rest/nap time, and medical needs.
* Classrooms should be set-up to reflect the current themes and centers should be organized to meet state standards and children's needs.
* Participates in and contributes to staff meetings, parents meetings/conferences, IFSP/IEPs, and opportunities for professional development. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Reports issues, concerns, or topics that need to be included in staff meetings.
* Initiates discussions with parents related to their child.
* Conducts parents meetings/conferences as outlined in the policy manual.
* Attends workshops and conferences as directed by supervisor.
* Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of NAEYC Developmentally Appropriate Practice, TN Department of Education Standards, Parent Handbook, Vanderbilt's policies and procedures, and Center's policies and procedures.
* Attends staff meetings.
* Respect roles and professional boundaries of others.
* Follow through with assigned roles and required activities (i.e. staff meetings).
* Attend and participate in IFSP/IEPs.
* Establish a routine method of communicating with the families in your classroom.
* Provides appropriate transitional plans. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Inform student, family members and members of the student educational team of the projected transitional time from the school to their home school district.
* Make appropriate transitional recommendations with the student educational team.
* Provides supervision to student teachers and graduate students as assigned and as appropriate to quality patient care and their professional development needs. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Provide instruction, information, readings, guidance/counsel and training to ensure competent student care is provided by supervisees at all times.
* Ensure supervisees comply with unit-specific, department/center, and medical center policies and procedures.
* Ensure supervisees are evaluated in writing and evaluations are documented in a timely manner and reviewed face-to-face consistent with all pertinent/established guidelines and standards for supervision in the department.
* Meets all mandated continuing education requirements. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Maintain continuing education records and submit continuing education verification documentation to maintain state licensing and TN DOE requirements.
* Attend supervisory and other training activities provided within the Medical Center.
* Provides education to others and participates in formal/informal research activities. Demonstrates the ability to:
* Participate in teaching and mentoring activities on campus and/or in the community.
* Participates in formal research, data collection, an application of evidence based practices, and/or quality assurance data collection activities.
