About the Role

The Politics Correspondent, based in Washington, D.C., will break news on politics, campaigns, and Congress. The reporter is expected to produce enterprise and fast-moving stories on the biggest issues and figures in American politics. This reporter will be an anchor of The Beast's coverage of Washington, working with our journalists covering the White House, Congress, money in politics, presidential candidates, and more.

The ideal candidate will have a high news metabolism, a proven track record of breaking news and a demonstrated ability to come up with fresh angles on the biggest stories of the day. This reporter will also have experience collaborating with colleagues and elevating the reporters around them. Candidates must also have demonstrated skills to write quick pieces and deeply reported articles that weave interviews, profile material, anecdotes, and exclusive details into compelling narratives. Travel may be required on some stories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pitch, report and write news stories and features with original angles and sharp perspective.
  • Deliver exclusive stories with national impact on a regular basis.
  • Interview major political players for news stories, profiles, and investigations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on reporting projects and major breaking news.
  • Develop top-level sources with first-hand knowledge of newsworthy events, conversations and decisions.

Qualifications

  • Scoop-minded, with a proven track record of landing exclusive stories that drive the national conversation.
  • Deep familiarity with the world of Washington politics.
  • A wide source base and skills to grow it.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strong writing skills, with the versatility to write narratives, analysis, and straight news.
  • A driver's license and a willingness to travel if a story demands it.
  • An understanding of pressing topics for diverse cultures, communities, and racial and ethnic identities.
  • A self-starter who can conceive and execute stories with impact.
  • 5+ years of experience.

Pay Range Salary

The pay range for this position is $110,000 to $140,000 annually.

The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, performance and other factors. The range listed is just one component of The Daily Beast's total compensation package. The Daily Beast provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, 401K employer matching program, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO).
