The VP, Media Strategy/Media Planning, based in Chicago, IL, is a crucial member of the agency’s team. Media Strategy and Planning will also oversee the agency’s team responsible for driving strategically aligned tactical channel detail, collaborating with investment colleagues on flawless execution, and working with analytics team to effectively connect media solutions to measurement, performance, and real time optimization.

An ideal candidate would have experience with retail clients and be used to fast-paced environments requiring both annual planning and ongoing promotional based needs. The VP, Media Strategy/Media Planning is largely responsible for building, leading, and inspiring internal teams while driving thought leadership and innovative solutions through Empower’s proprietary planning platform to provide best-in-class work for the agency’s full client portfolio. Keep in mind, we all have to roll up our sleeves from time-to-time and go hands-to-keyboards. The right candidate will establish a trusted partnership with the most senior client contacts by demonstrating deep knowledge of their business and ensuring clear, flawless media plans to achieve business objectives. They must be a disciplined strategist with deep working knowledge of full-funnel media including performance and retail media channels. Collaboration across internal teams and a consistent leadership presence is vital for this role, and the candidate must be committed to working alongside all agency employees 4 days a week out of our downtown Chicago office.


Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for client immersion, building and cascading in-depth knowledge of the client business and consumer to internal teams and departments.
  • Develop (or lead the team that is developing) comprehensive, 360 media strategies, maintain ownership of and training for the agency’s proprietary planning platform.
  • Play a key role in working to optimize and evolve cross-functional agency process, working closely with internal colleagues to establish efficient, effective, and collaborative ways of working.
  • Senior contact for client leaders, building trusted, fluid, and transparent relationships; foster team members to establish role-appropriate client relationships as well.
  • Coach and mentor team of strategy/planning specialists by providing appropriate and timely feedback, ensuring adequate and complete training for key tasks, creating an environment of trust and transparency, and fostering relationships that positively impact company culture.
  • Work closely with analytics team to ensure media plans are being developed with the most appropriate and effective measurement plans, leveraging full tech stack to drive real time performance insights and action beyond linear media reporting alone. Experience with real time performance dashboards a plus.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams in service of client business outcomes, including facilitating and driving investment & activation plans as well as ensuring measurement frameworks are delivered. Maintain collaborative, one-team philosophy and serve as an example for others in this area.
  • Frequently support agency business development in developing media strategy ideation, tactical ideas, and process recommendations.
  • Maintain active awareness of new media-relevant industry/market trends; develop points of view regarding those trends; and communicate appropriate action steps to teams and clients. Act as thought leader and inspire team to maintain a spirit of curiosity, business interest, and confidence to share their idea.
  • Manage Statements of Work/Agreements and oversee account profitability in collaboration with senior agency leaders and operations.


Education, Experience & Skills:

  • Strong analytical ability with media strategy development, including target audience analysis, budget allocation, channel planning, tactical plan alignment, optimization, measurement, and reporting.
  • A rich understanding of measurement and attribution beyond linear reporting.
  • Track record of successfully negotiating with clients and vendors to reach an agreement/solution that best meets agency or client needs.
  • High energy, passionate, curious, confident, and tenacious in learning, coupled with the ability to navigate the nuances of different client teams.
  • Must communicate quickly and accurately, think quickly or improvise, and present confidently.
  • Should be a nimble self-starter and quickly adjust to internal and external teams in an ever-changing environment; identify opportunity with bias to action.
  • 12+ years of experience in client leadership in media and other advertising/marketing disciplines.
  • Have a track record of success in building strong relationships, leading teams, influencing others, and navigating client culture.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Advertising, Marketing, or equivalent knowledge & experience.
