Position Overview

The Community Support Specialist fosters a secure, respectful, and welcoming atmosphere by delivering exceptional hospitality and embodying the principles of compassion and service. This role is essential in providing essential support to individuals facing homelessness, helping to inspire hope and commitment to personal transformation. The specialist utilizes local knowledge and administrative capabilities to assist clients in accessing vital resources both within and outside the organization. Monitoring guest activities throughout the facility, the specialist is available to provide individualized care, encouragement, and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engages with guests through exceptional hospitality and dignity.
  • Offers spiritual support through attentive listening, prayer, and sound guidance when opportunities arise.
  • Facilitates the check-in process for evening guests, including bed assignments and distribution of essential items.
  • Ensures a safe and secure environment for guests, staff, and volunteers.
  • Maintains accurate documentation to support effective service delivery and fulfill organizational objectives.
  • Oversees, trains, and mentors volunteers as required.
  • Represents the organization positively to guests, volunteers, donors, and partner organizations.
  • Demonstrates a caring and principled lifestyle to guests, colleagues, volunteers, and supporters.
  • Establishes a foundational sense of safety and hope for personal development and change among residents, volunteers, and staff.
  • Leads with a fundamental understanding of mental health challenges, substance abuse issues, trauma, and poverty, particularly concerning those affected.
  • Performs administrative tasks as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate core values and demonstrate compassion when interacting with guests, colleagues, and the public.
  • Capacity to show empathy, establish appropriate boundaries, and exercise sound judgment regarding service limitations.
  • Basic understanding of mental health, substance abuse, trauma, and poverty, particularly in relation to effective communication with affected individuals, crisis identification, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to safely manage tense situations and de-escalate potentially harmful interactions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and other office technologies.
  • Ability to provide guidance to others; high degree of adaptability and resourcefulness.
  • Certification in CPR and Basic First Aid is preferred.
  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience is desirable.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Basic organizational and follow-up skills are essential.

Work Environment

  • Community service facility where emergency assistance is provided.
  • Exposure to challenging client situations requiring empathy and discernment.
  • Physical activities include walking, standing, sitting, bending, and minimal lifting.
  • Participation in meetings and occasional special events is required.
