Position Overview

The Monell Chemical Senses Center, a prestigious non-profit research institution recognized globally for its contributions to the understanding of taste, smell, and related sensory systems, is on the lookout for a dynamic and visionary Senior Director, Donor Relations. This role is essential in steering the organization towards sustainable growth and enhancing its philanthropic endeavors to maximize its influence on global health.

As a newly established position, the Senior Director, Donor Relations will report directly to the Executive Director and President, collaborating closely with the executive leadership team, governing board, faculty, and staff to articulate and execute the organization's strategic vision.

This influential leadership role is tasked with spearheading the organization's fundraising initiatives. The ideal candidate will be responsible for achieving an ambitious target of securing $2 million in new donor contributions annually.

The successful applicant will possess extensive experience in fundraising leadership and organizational development, particularly in a non-profit or research setting. A strong commitment to the mission, exceptional communication abilities, and a proven track record in philanthropy and fundraising are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

  • Formulate a comprehensive strategy for fundraising that aligns with the organization's vision and financial objectives.
  • Establish annual revenue targets and devise plans to diversify and enhance the organizational budget through effective development strategies.
  • Promote a culture of philanthropy within the organization and lead by example.
  • Collaborate with senior management to craft impactful messaging for donor engagement.
  • Mentor and support the Executive Director, Board, and staff in cultivating donor relationships.
  • Participate as a key member of the executive management team.

Major Gifts Program Implementation:

  • Identify, engage, solicit, and nurture relationships with major gift prospects and donors.
  • Design tailored strategies for connecting with high-net-worth individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Donor Relations and Stewardship:

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and relevant teams, enhance relationships with existing donors to increase their contributions through various engagement methods.
  • Ensure timely recognition and reporting for major gifts.

Campaign Leadership:

  • Oversee preparations for upcoming capital and endowment campaigns, as well as special fundraising initiatives.
  • Track campaign progress and ensure financial goals are met.

Board Relations:

  • Prepare comprehensive development reports for the Executive Director ahead of board meetings.
  • Encourage and support the Board's fundraising efforts.

Financial Management:

  • Develop and oversee the budget for the development department.
  • Monitor fundraising expenditures to ensure efficient operations.
  • Collaborate with the CFO to establish income goals that align with the Center's financial requirements.
  • Assess and report on the department's financial performance.

Marketing and Communications:

  • Work with the marketing team to create compelling fundraising materials and donor communications.
  • Assist in branding and marketing strategies for development initiatives.
  • Promote the organization's mission through various communication channels.

Data Management:

  • Utilize donor management systems to monitor and evaluate fundraising activities.
  • Coordinate development activities and track progress against annual plans.
  • Enhance development processes, including recordkeeping and acknowledgments.
  • Provide regular updates on fundraising outcomes to senior leadership and the board.
Qualifications

Fundraising Expertise:

  • Proven experience in creating and managing a successful fundraising program.
  • Experience in developing annual work plans to meet fundraising goals.
  • Track record of increasing contributions from individual donors and securing major gifts.
  • Experience with capital campaigns and comprehensive fundraising strategies.
  • Familiarity with planned giving and online fundraising methods is preferred.

Leadership and Management:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a diverse team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Strategic Planning:

  • Capability to develop and execute strategic fundraising plans.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate fundraising performance and adjust strategies accordingly.

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field; a master's degree or CFRE certification is preferred.
  • Significant experience in development, particularly in major gifts fundraising.
  • Extensive experience collaborating with executive leadership and board members in a non-profit context.
