We are currently seeking a highly qualified and passionate individual for the role of Chief Officer of Legal Affairs and Compliance.
Position Overview
We are in search of an experienced and dynamic professional to assume the role of Chief Officer of Legal Affairs and Compliance. This senior executive position is responsible for managing all legal and compliance functions within our organization. The ideal candidate will possess a strategic mindset, a robust legal background, and the capability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks. This role reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer as well as to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Formulating and executing strategies to proactively mitigate legal risks and ensure adherence to all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards pertinent to higher education and healthcare.
- Providing expert legal advice and guidance to senior leadership and stakeholders on a variety of legal matters affecting the organization.
- Overseeing the drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts, agreements, and other legal documents, including those related to clinical education and residency programs.
- Managing all facets of the organization’s legal affairs, including medical malpractice, employment litigation, intellectual property, and corporate governance.
- Monitoring legislative and regulatory changes that may impact the organization and advising management on compliance strategies.
- Collaborating with the Chief Human Resources Officer on employee-related matters, including advisory roles for the Retirement Plan Investment Committee.
- Working alongside the Chief Admissions Officer to ensure compliance with anti-discrimination laws and other legal issues in the admissions process.
- Co-chairing and managing the Institutional Compliance Committee and Health Care Compliance Committee.
- Administering and supervising the Internal Audit function under the Audit Committee's guidance.
- Collaborating with the Chief Risk Management Officer on insurance coverage and claims matters.
- Ensuring compliance with Title IX and related regulations in conjunction with the Title IX office.
- Managing the compliance reporting system and conducting internal investigations into compliance issues, implementing corrective actions as necessary.
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with external legal counsel, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders.
- Advising on HIPAA, FERPA, and other privacy and information security matters in collaboration with the Chief Information Security Officer/Chief Privacy Officer.
- Providing counsel to the Provost, Deans, and Chief Student Affairs Officer regarding contested student academic and disciplinary proceedings.
- Developing and implementing policies and procedures to foster a culture of ethics and integrity throughout the organization.
- Delivering training and education to staff on legal and compliance issues.
- Staying informed on best practices and emerging trends in legal and compliance management within higher education and healthcare.
Qualifications
Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school (required) and active Bar admission in Pennsylvania or Georgia.
Experience: A minimum of 10 years of legal practice experience, with a focus on areas critical to this role. Experience in higher education and/or healthcare is strongly preferred.
Skills: Proven leadership capabilities, strong understanding of regulatory requirements, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and a high level of integrity and ethical standards.
Salary Range: Commensurate based on experience.
