Job Title: Bioanalysis and Biofabrication Research Specialist

Position Overview:

The Bioanalysis and Biofabrication Research Specialist plays a pivotal role in delivering leadership, management, and technical expertise for shared facilities and equipment utilized in the examination and creation of biological samples. This position encompasses the oversight of both staffed and unstaffed facilities, providing guidance on study design and execution, formulating operational protocols, and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards associated with equipment utilization.

Key Responsibilities:

Research Support

  • Provide expert guidance on the design and implementation of studies that leverage shared equipment.
  • Establish and uphold standard operating procedures for core facility apparatus.
  • Assist researchers in experimental design, encompassing both overarching strategies and specific methodologies.

Facilities Leadership and Management

  • Direct the development and functioning of the Bioanalysis and Biofabrication core facility, which merges biomolecular and cellular analysis with bioprinting and microfluidic techniques to advance bioengineering research.
  • Ensure that the facilities cater to the requirements of both internal and external users.
  • Collaborate closely with leadership, faculty advisory groups, and users to formulate long-term business strategies for sustaining the shared facilities.
  • Engage with campus facilities personnel on installation and infrastructure initiatives.

User Base Development

  • Establish and maintain a robust internal and external user community.
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, administrators, and external partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in shared research or equipment facilities, with an emphasis on biological samples and experiments.
  • Five years of experience with bioanalytical techniques, 3D bioprinting technologies, cell culture and analysis, rheological analysis, and microscopy.
  • Experience in project management, staff and/or student supervision, and financial/budget administration within a scientific or technical facility.

Professional Competencies:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of research laboratory safety regulations and facility infrastructure, operations, and maintenance.
  • Progressive management experience in a related technical environment.
  • Financial management and business development experience in a shared core facility context.
  • Experience in assisting researchers with experimental design and scientific methodologies, including both high-level approaches and specific techniques.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency with software and technology, including hands-on operation of core facility tools.
  • Capability to manage competing interests from multiple stakeholders in a dynamic R&D environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in managing or providing technical leadership in a comparable research facility.
  • Advanced degree in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, materials science engineering, materials science, physics, biophysics, or a related field.
  • Experience with the installation and maintenance of significant research equipment.
  • Experience with biomaterials analysis, chemical synthesis of bioinks, co-culture of human cells, immunohistological staining, cryosectioning, and imaging of 3D constructs.
  • Project management and/or finance skills, including budget management in a technical setting.
  • Experience in implementing and managing complex safety regulations and protocols.
  • Familiarity with financial and administrative policies, rules, and procedures.
